hi all, my friends have just told me that when u book a ticket for baby - you don't get extra luggage allowance - is this true?

Also i wanted to know about the stroller - does it get counted as hand luggage? is it allowed on board or does it have to be checked in? Try as i might i cannot remember if i have seen parents with babies in strollers inside airports or not - i think my brain is totally shot!

Any tips from those that have flown with little babies (will be 51/2 months when we fly) will be most apprecaited.

Regarding strollers, it depends on the airline. Some don't count it as hand luggage and will take the stroller from you at the door of the plane. Some airlines require you to check it in. Check with the airline you'll be flying with.

From my experiences you will get about 10kg allowance for baby luggage if you buy an infant ticket (when I was flying to UK and Indonesia). Last time I bought a children ticket and I got another 20kg for my kid.

if it's an infant ticket (the 10% one) I didn't get any extra luggage - but stroller didn't count against my hand luggage. I used the stroller throughout the airport and checked it at the gate.

A kids ticket - where you actually get a seat - you actually get some additional luggage.

Infant ticket gets 1 hand luggage (like a diaper bag or something) but no luggage allowance. But for Child ticket (as hkchoichoi says), you get luggage allowance.

Always insist at check in to have your stroller taken at the GATE. They will put a tag on the stroller, then you get the stroller until you board the plane, where they will take it from you, and you will see it again when you deplane, again at the gate.

Some airlines actually allow "umbrella" strollers to be brought inside the cabin, then that's consider hand luggage. Nowadays, I don't see any reason to do that when the crew takes it for you at the gate of the plane and it's sometimes already there before you even deplane. Not like you are using it DURING the flight.

Hope this helps.

Susicunningham is right about CX.

Not only does infant gets 10kg, but if to americas, infant gets 32 kg luggage (1 checked in luggage allowed)

I guess I didn't need that extra luggage allowance for my baby when I travelled. I forgot about that! We only used up the adults and child's allowance.

Generally, the American airlines (not just AA) do not give infant allowances. We certianly got one with BA. As far as taking the stroller onboard goes, I always try. In some airports (e.g. Heathrow, Zurich), they often won't return it to you until you get to the carousel, which can be quite a trek, especially if you don't have your husband with you.

i swear we had baggage allowance for our baby when we flew on BA last august...10kg or something?

we only checked in our buggy (which included a carseat) just before boarding and i don't think they added that to the overall weight of our luggage.

and if you are flying to heathrow, it might be a trek to the carousel like mrsl mentioned, which is when they bring out the whole plane of buggies out so if your baby is only about 5-6 months, a baby bjorn/sling until you reclaim your stuff might be useful.
