My 11 ½ month old son is yet to cut his first teeth. He has been slightly behind in achieving his developmental milestones (began sitting independently at 6 ½ months but rolled over only at 8 ½, began crawling at 9 and pulling up to a stand at 10). Could this late teething also be part of his delayed schedule?
My second question is related to his weight gain. He is a rather small baby; has been on the 15th centile for weight & length (birthweight 3.05 kg/ at 4 months: 6.2 kg/ at11 months: 8.1 kg). On the paediatrician’s advice, I have added meat, fish (mainly salmon), egg yolk, cheese and yogurt to his diet but we are yet to see any improvement in his weight (in the past month he gained only 95g!). He is still being breastfed on demand with three solid meals and a snack or two. I am having doubts about his milk intake – for one, he tends to get distracted very easily (feeds for less than 5 minutes) and secondly he feeds exclusively from one side. Is he just meant to be lean and small or is it something to do with his diet? I must add that he is otherwise a healthy and active baby.
Any moms out there with late teethers and/or small babies?

mine isn't a late teether but definitely a small one!
i think at about age 1, he was about 9kg or so....his playmates at least 1-2kg more than him.
but he is extremely active, eats well and sleeps well so i'm not worried.
at 15 months, some of his friends are still a little more puffy than him but it's all balancing out nicely now...he's an average little guy.

ps, his birthweight was 2.75kg at 39 weeks.

Our baby was born at 7lbs 11 ox (3.5 kilos) around 50%... then spend his first 13 months under the 10%....
He got his first teeth at 9 months...
He got 4 teeth by 11 months, and stayed at 4...
Now at 17 months he jusst got is 5th tooth and 6th, 7th 8th, and a few more seem to be coming in as well all at once.
From evertyhing I have read teething is NOT related to size or development.
Regarding your son only eating for 5 mins per side (always offer the second side just in case he wants it) and being super active and happy.... you pretty much described our since 15 months he has been around the 30%.... so lots changes after one year for some reason.
We focused on high calorie food, check this out for more info: http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/vitamins/babyfoodcalories.html
I can't comment on the developmental side, all babies develop differently, but YOU are the mother, so fi you are concerned you should raise with your Dr and get a second opinion if you want one.

my 8.5 months old little girl was 2.9kg at birth, now about 9kgs/70+cm. started crawling at 6.5months on her tummy, now she does it very fast (almost running if she's walking )but she doesn't sit independently, I'm thingking maybe she gets bored (as if they know what boredom feels ) sitting still. this week she started pulling herself up in her cot. She's got 4teeth, eats 3 solid meals a day ( veges/carbo/fish/hardboiled eggyellow/chicken & ham,) milk intake about 24oz a day. She's almost heavier than her 1year old girlfriend, they just grow and develop differently.

Both mine were and are small, they were also late teethers, got their first teeth about 10 months and my 7 year old and waiting for her first tooth to fall out.
My advise, and it is only this, is as long as BUBS is healthy and your happy with the way he's going DON'T FRET. All bubbas are different and although we do, we shouldn't compare.
If you are worries then pop along to your doctors, that's what they are there for.

My lo got her first tooth (and it was a back one at 14 half months) she is still missing one next to her front tooth but Dr said that's not a problem (I think he thought I was mad to even think it was !)
She was 8.7 kgs at 16 months and now she is 29 months she is 11.5 kgs so still slightly below average but Dr not worried at all.
I think your LO sounds fine, just small and active and if you are still breastfeeding then no teeth is an advantage (ouch!) I stopped breastfeeding at 13 and half months so never got bitten!

My daughter is 23 months old and has only 8 front teeth fully in (3 mnths ago), and now has 3 more cutting through. I asked my dentist and Dr. and it is fine.

It's great to read about all these other later teethers!!
I just think of it as my son being super efficient - he tends to get a few teeth in one week.... who knows when the next 'batch' will be!!

thanks moms for the reassurance.
My boy has finally cut his first tooth. He is just 10 days shy of his first birthday. What a wait this has been!

Actually you want them to get teeth late. The later they come in the stronger they are, even the adult teeth. People who get teeth really early tend to get more cavities.
My son is 19 months and weighs 9kg. He got his first tooth at 11 months. But he is happy and VERY active, and quite healthy.
I say don't worry about it. They do things at their own pace.

Late is great! Our boy got his first tooth just after his first birthday and only just got his back molars in the last 6 months - he's turning 3 in August.
He went so long without teeth he was nicknamed "Gummi"the only hassle - having to "mince" everything because he couldnt bite food apart.
We were reminded to give him solid food once he had a couple of teeth so that he could practice biting and chomping as gum movement important for speech development.
Happy chomping

Also, look at your husband's and your development. Were you lean babies too? It's often genetic.
Happy ToothDay!

My daughter is 10 months old and she is yet to open her teeth account. However, she bites her biscuts with her gums! i can hear the crackling sound. I can see the teeth inside her gums and been waiting for them for the past couple of months.
