My son used to LOVE eating... he enjoys eating each meal, and each milk feeding. Until 2 months ago, so around 16 months.... he refuses to eat anything. Anything new, he would try two bites, and then he would spit it all out, and get really upset.
We have tried to blend his foods, chop his foods, blend with soup, mash, steam, fry, broil, pan fry, roast, bake.....
All kinds of foods, and all kinds of cuisines.
He prefers jar baby food over fresh cooked foods.
He also will eat crunchy foods like fries, and chips.
Even milk formula, he used to drink 9 oz per feed, three times a day. Now, he drinks 5 oz 3 times a day.
I am so frustrated..... what to do?
We have tried everything.... now, it's to the point where he just sees a spoon, he will scream, and he will throw away the bib, and he will put his hands covering his mouth.....
What to do?

hi there,
you mentioned he screams at the sight of the spoon....does he feed himself with the spoon or are you spoonfeeding him? at 18 months, most kids would want to feed themselves so maybe he's just protesting about being spoonfed.
also, i think the milk reduction is pretty normal. after 1 according to most baby books, a toddler needs an average of 400ml a day. your kid is drinking 15oz per day, that's 450ml.

I would just take his food away from him when he refuses to touch it and ignore his actions.
He will come round:
A. when he realises that his actions don't get any attention
B. when he's hungry
C. get him involved in choosing
I know that sounds brutal but i bet if you talk to a lot of Mums, me included, we've all been there and felt awaful when they don't eat BUT it's a phase and possibly an attention seeking one.
Other possibility is his mouth ok? Sore throat? Teething?

How about trying just finger foods for a while. Also letting feed himself with the spoon is a good suggestion.
My LO isn't the greatest of eaters but she will eat a lot if you don't hassle her or put a time limit on it (sometimes easier said than done!)so once she leaves the big table I move her food to a small one and she eats it gradually.
Try not to let the little one see you are stressed. Good luck.
My LO was always on the skinny side but now she is average on the weight charts.

oh one more advice, which works well with my kid. i never shove a big bowl of food in front of him, i always halve the portion. he'll eat one half, have a water break and then finish the other half.
it helps to cool the food faster and doesn't put him off as some kids are turned off at the sight of a big mountain of food!

Hi..my baby whos now 3 did almost the same thing when she was around 18 months old...she would just not eat anything out of a bowl with a spoon and slowly we realised that she wants to eat only firm things, no mashed squeasy stuff for her, finger foods and solid foods were in, perhaps he too is going thru the same transition, i still rem the date when she gave up on her soup and then i had to make a mix veg cutlet kind of thing so that she gets her veggies which she was ok eating..

Get an ice cube tray.
Put little bits of food in each hole.
Let him eat what he chooses.
Do NOT feed him. Let him do his own thing.
Try frozen food popsicles too...you can freeze almost anything and kids like it better in hot weather.
How is his weight gain? Get him charted for your own piece of mind.
