my son took his first steps at 10.5 months. now at 15 months, he is incredibly active, running (seriously, not just walking), climbing and doing all the things cheeky 15 month old toddlers do.
the problem (or hopefully it's not a problem) is that when he is walking, he tip toes 50% of the time instead of having his feet flat on the ground.
the info on the web about this on was that this is not uncommon BUT if it continues, the calf muscles of the child will become very strained and some parents had to send their child for physio as they grow older.
does anyone on this forum have kids who used to walk on tip toes or still walking on tip toes? is there anything i can do to encourage him to walk flat on his feet. currently it's quite tough because he seems almost proud that he can walk on tip toes, like it's a skill!

Hi Wheeley mate, my LO is now 29 months and walks on her tiptoes 50% of time. She is great at ballet! Also she is very active like your LO, runs pretty much everywhere.
I shouldn't worry, I have seen lots of LO on tip toes and my nephew who is now 13 always walked that way and he is fine!

hi all,
thanks for sharing. i am hoping he will grow out of it (like one of my friend's kid) but at the same time, i do worry about him still tip toeing at 4 years old like what saikunga described!
anyone else? cheers!

My nephew was the same - walking on tiptoes - more than 50% of the time...
by the time he was two, the podiatrist or someone put him in these boots at night - which would help stretch out the calf muscles and help him reduce the amount of tip toeing during the day.
Now he is an active 6 year old, no tiptoes and a super tiptop athlete.
I had told my sister in law to just sit and wait it out -but she decided on a more proactive agressive approach - and I think it was to her advantage to do so.

thanks for all the advice.
yes, my concern that it will become a habit (like a bad twitch or something) that will be difficult to get rid of as he is older.
we'll be seeing his doc for a vaccination soon, so i'll get some advice from him.

My friends son is nearly 19, still walks on his tip toes a lot of the time, plays rugby, hikes mountain climbs, has never stopped him.

Hi I got a bit worried so checked the internet for myself and found this which put my mind and hopefully Wheelymates at rest!

Also a Korean friend of mine said that it means your next baby will be of the opposite sex to the first!

Bearing in mind that all this happened long long ago and far far away, I had a cousin who had to have surgery on the back of his ankle to lengthen the achilles tendon. The child had always walked on his tip toes, and at the time of surgery he was not able to walk except on tip toes. My mom told me the cousin was born with short tendons and that the doctor had told my cousin's mom to stretch his ankles every time she changed his diaper, but that the mom didn't do it. Anyway, a doctor member of my own family once told me it's fine for a baby to walk on tip toes as long as they are in fact ABLE to walk normally. My cousin was not able to walk any other way. This was also in the days before physio was on my radar screen certainly. Probably nowadays he would have been referred for therapy. Hopefully your child just happens to enjoy running on tiptoe, happy with life!

mgr,
he can definitely walk normally, it's just that i observe that he does tip toe quite abit and actually enjoys doing it!
i am trying not to worry too much about it - hkc, your link was slightly reassuring, i just hope mine grows out of it eventually! i'll try out the massage advice from the link. but i'll check with his doctor just in case at our next visit.

Wheelymate, recently it has been a little more worrying for me. My daughter is 2 yrs 5 mths and tiptoes probably 75%-80% of the time. At the beginning everybody thought 'how cute' but I've been telling her "walk on your feet with your heels on the ground". As soon as she hears me, down she goes on her flat feet. So, she can walk properly I just have to remind her. I also have heard that it can shorten your calf muscles if you walk on tiptoes. I probably should ask the GP next time too. Thanks for bringing this more to my attention.
