Reusing Breast milk

ORIGINAL POST

Hi..all the books say that breast milk once taken out of the refrigerator and given to baby should not be put back again..I feel really bad when i have to throw away the residual breast milk..I express for my 8 weeks old so that she doesnt go hungry when i need to go out with my older one. Sometime she just drinks 1 oz from the 3 oz expressed and then i just throw the rest out..I am considering now dividing my milk in 2 bottles..

does anyone else go thru the same quandary...can we reuse the balance milk if refrigerated immediately after bubs has had some of it

the main reason that you shouldn't reuse breastmilk is that you lose the antibodies and all that extra "good stuff" in there. However, a midwife told me that you can reuse breastmilk within 8 hours if it is refrigerated. It is not as "potent" with all the antibodies that it once had, but it's still not going to hurt your baby.

That being said, I always put my breastmilk in 50 ml packets - in order to try and eliminate this. Other moms have done the ice cube method in order to just get the amount of milk they needed.

Don't feel bad about "wasting," there's always more where that came from.

i too feel bad about wasting breast milk - i never freeze it and alway use up the milk that i've expressed usually within 12hours and sometimes within 24hours.

My son get's EBM feeds when i'm at work.

Occasionally he leaves an ounce or two. in the begining i threw it out - now i refigerate immediately and reuse it asap.

it is'nt a question of having more where that came from - it's also to do with having to sterilise pumps bottles etc before each use.

So far baby has never had any stomach problems (no upset stomach, no stomach ache etc).
