Has anyone heard any more about the cable car accident? Anyone seen a release of what really happened?
I see that Ngong Ping is still advertised on Now TV as one of the attractions which is up for the Asian Attractions awards which seems a bit strange since I think that it is still closed isn't it?

Still closed. Cable cars are back on and moving, but just for testing.

Premature metal fatigue led to component failure.
The system was built by an Italian company which specializes in building ski lifts in the mountain, where there is no salty sea and very low moisture level... They didn't predict the kind of wear the conditions here would inflict on the components.
Bottom line, they'll probably replace all the affected parts, come up with a modified maintenance sched to replace them more often, test it and put it back online.
Its reputation will take a blow, but I guess they juts won't tell the mainland tourists...

EMSD (government dept) should be resposible, they have been building mechanical device for the past decades and anyone who involved in the construction business would know the metal fatigue implications.

Thanks all for the further info.
Interesting that the Ocean Park cable car has been going so long and, as far as I am aware, no disconnecting cars (fingers crossed for the future). Perhaps they should have used the same company as that one since clearly they had the salty air and humidity assessment correct. Such a shame as it was a fantastic ride. I hear that the tenants in the village area have been given rent free until it is up and running again. Shame for them as will be a killer for their businesses.
Stil think that it should be removed from the Asian Attraction Awards.

Italian co?? i thought it was a swiss company... on discovery channel they even showed how they built the cable towers, the factory that made the cables and so on in wonderful structure series.
a pity... it was a good ride with breath taking views....
