Alternative to Norton Internet Security

My Norton Symantec Internet Security subscription expires next week, would like to know other options.

Latest Norton protection seems to slow down my PC a lot, heard its due to size of the program.

Anyone have other suggestions? Any free options available?

Many thanks!

We use AVG on all our computers. They have paid and free versions for Anti Virus only.

Or u can try Kaspersky...am using Kaspersky for all our PC at work. So far its much better then AVG, Norton and NOD32. It does slow down the computers a little but then it does more scanning then the rest.

I have used AVG for several years after Norton missed a virus and AVG was able to disable it. Zone Alarm has a "suite" although I can't vouch for its effectiveness - I like ZA for its firewall. Problem for many software packages is they are trying to catch up to Vista requirements, so you might keep that in mind if you have Vista.

I've been using "AntiVir" the last few years and finds it works great and only takes-up little memory useage compared to Nortons and most other antivirus programs I've tried and I like it better than AVG as well. They have a free verion called "AntiVir Personal Edition Classic", but I don't think they yet have a version available for Windows Vista:

If you are running Windows Vista (or most versions of Windows for that matter), then another good free antivirus program you can get called "Avast Home Edition" over at: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Of course you should only be running one anti-virus program at any given time on a computer to avoid conflicts.

Agree with blackvirusss. After installing Kaspersky, don't seem to have any problems with virus now. Tested a few other brands, bt definitely go for kaspersky. There is this virus in our co. and tested with a few anti-virus to remove it but failed...after installing Kaspersky, its gone for good.

Don't forget to install one or more anti-spyware/bots, like Ad-Aware or Spybot, to name a few, they're free and pretty efficient.

Most of the 'dirt' you get from the net that slows your computer down are not viruses, they're just nasty little prorams that self install and spy and your data or open pop up windows all the time, robbing your memory.

Just switched to Kaspersky from Norton on the basis of this thread, and am very happy with the results. Computers working faster, and 17 threats/viruses detected by Kaspersky which Norton failed to find. Also, if you buy online, you can get a 30% discount, by telling them that you are switching from another product (you need to provide your old product license key).
