A little more info would be useful. XP? Aby other accounts on the PC?
Login to administrator, go to control panel, user accounts and change the password.
If you don't see the administrator account on your login screen, and no one is logged into the PC, press Control/Alt/Delete twice and you'll bring up a login screen. Type administrator and the password, but if you're like most people, the admin account has inadvertently been left without a password so no password will be required.

As mentioned, most people forget to password protect the admin account, so try login name "administrator" and leave the password blank.

I'm so glad you got it working again !!!
Whenever I open a new Hotmail or Yahoo acct, I email myself on my main address so that I have a record of the username and password.

I would guess that the internet and what's available on it has changed a lot since your successful uni graduate was 11 years old.
That's several life times in terms of technology - and, unfortunately, in the growth of the vast array of inappropriate materials that pop up.

Singlemum,
You of course put a password on the admin account?
Nuts&Bolts,
One could argue that sensible/responsible parenting would include monitoring your childs internet activities.
Disagree with your advice on passwords.

Has nothing to do with getting inside your head to steal an ancient phone number, has to do with simplistic passwords that can be cracked in as little as a few minutes. Check out:

We ran some of these in a test environment a couple months ago and were able to crack simple passwords over coffee break while complex passwords still hadn't been cracked overnight.
I don't disagree with you with using simple passwords such as an ancient phone number for something such as your AX password, but I personally wouldn't use a simple password for anything containing personal or financial details. I still feel that your password advice, although helpful in remembering a password, may not have been the best advice.
Light and fair is good, as is trust. However it may not be a trust issue with our children but with the millions of other people on the net interacting with our children. Glad to hear your daughter is a successful uni graduate with no hang-ups, I hope in the future I can say the same thing about my children:)
