Your daughter can get a "Home Return" card from China Travel Service. Do a search of forums here or google.
If you get your visa at the border as you enter Shenzhen, it is just valid for Shenzhen.
If you apply directly to the China visa office or through a travel agent, it is for China and there are different lengths of time and different types of visas (eg. single, dual or multi-entry). Travel agencies also charge a service fee as they go to the visa office and stand in line for you. There are different costs for different countries - it all seems to depend on how much your home country charges Chinese citizens for a visa.

CITS China Travel Services is where you go if you want to get the visas by yourself
http://www.ctshk.com/english/useful/chinesevisa.htm They have many offices in HK. Don't quote the prices from the website as they may be out of date.
Now I just have my travel agent do it for me, much easier.
We are all perm HKID, and this week got a 3 year multiple entry for my USA passport, and 6 months multiple entry for my kids on their British passports (because they are too young and don't have ID cards they would not give us longer).
It used to be that British were cheaper than American, this time the American was cheaper... who knows what it will be next week :)

Single entry now cost about 280 HKG, my friend got his done last week, it a same day service. Call Rosa at 9033 3240 or 2780 3326 Evergood Holidays, they specialize in China Visas. I think they can arrange to pick and drop off too, not sure if there is a sur-charge those...

Try Japan in TST. The prices are only $60HKD more than if you go and stand in queue at the China Visa office yourself.

I think CF means the Visa price, plus 60 HKD processing fee, so it costs 60 more than doing it yourself (which is good value as it saves you a lot of time).

annebin remember that different nationalities pay different prices.
I always use the trading house at 916 New Mandarin Centre 1, East TST. $500 less than CTS for 6 month multi entry for UK passport holder.
Recently got a 1 year multi entry along with my colleague from US and he paid nearly double the amount I did. So still applies, not sure what happened to crj! What did you pay for kids out of interest?

Hi Woody,
I used to get mine through Japan Travel Services in TST. But the previous 2 times I go directly to the China Embassy on Habour Rd. in Wanchai (as Pointman mentioned above). May be better to go directly there , just in case there are complications. Good Luck.
Oh, I found it usually quite efficient at the embassy
