Where can I get a good quality gripe water suitable for use on 7 wk old

Also how long does it take for a suspected iritant to effect your baby through breastfeeding? And how long does it stay in your milk/ body Eg. if I have yoghurt for breakfast if she was iritated by me eating dairy would it effect my baby at the next feed? And for how long after.... a day or two??

Thanks

from my limited experience, very few breastfeeding mothers in Korea seem to have problems with reflux or colic - and I suspect it has to do with a diet low in dairy. Koreans bfeeding moms get their calcium from other sources -their main source being anchovies which are often served with many meals.

Another source of reflux or discomfort in your baby - is if he or she is getting too much fore milk and not enough hindmilk. So try and make sure she has eaten through to the back of your milk. When she unlatches - the milk should be really creamy and rich - not clear or liquid or blueish. She will be drinking slower, not gulping, and will take pauses in between.

I saw your other cry for help on colic vs. reflux - I would actually suggest a visit from a midwife to see if your breastfeeding is going well. A midwife from Annerly is invaluable - they can just make sure that you are doing everything on your end possible, and offer additional diet tips for you.

Sometimes you do have to do the zantac - but it doesn't hurt to try to do everything else before.

breastfeeding is fine - she is a good feeder, as was my first, I have a good supply with her putting on heaps of weight. She drains the breast completely.... however I am careful not to overfeed (spews up) her or underfeed her (ony gets the foremilk) Last night after the usual 2-3 hrs of settling we were up at 11, 1, 3, 6 - infact I don't think she/ we hardly went down!! I am exhausted and know I have tried most things so guess the zantac must be next. I don't eat dairy have been very careful to avoid it and wouldn't even know if I reintroduced it if it was offending her as she is always upset

since she's your second - you must have a sense that something is just not as easy as the first. And it sounds like you've really tried everything. A visit and conversation with your pediatrician sounds like it is definitely in order.

whilst I have you guys on this thread - BTW all your postings contribute hugely to this forum, can you suggest a gripe water to try - something I have n't tried yet, or a herbal tea? Not sure if this will help with the reflux, which I guess in turn adds to the tummy pains/ colic?? Worth a try!

Try making a tea out of fennel seeds. It's good for your milk supply and the carminative effect of the fennel works like gripe water does.

It could be that your baby is going through a 'growth spurt' which are commonly at 3 weeks, 6 weeks(or thereabouts) 3 months and 6 months. Baby might just settle down in a day or so. Make sure you're drinking lots of water yourself in this hot weather. And do take it easy...try to not do too much yourself during the day...hang in there! This too shall pass.

cheers from Ruth

Just a comment on treating babies with colic. My child was born in London and was crying from day two due to colic. Was prescribed by ER room in Chelsea to give her a warm bath making sure to pass warm water over her tummy to settle her down. Since she was too young for gripe water then, we were recommended to use this medicine called Infacol. Dont know if you know someone back in London who can buy and send you the stuff. But it really helped me during those colicky times.
