ems2000, when are you planning to go? I was there last year in July and have to admit the weather was dreadful! Best season in end November to Easter, outside of those month, Koh Chang though being a gorgeous highland is also the worst rainy area of full Thailand...
During summer, public transportations is also reduced to minimum service specially at evening and night time.
Another thing to keep in mind, most of the beaches are bad and dangerous during rainy season, accidents are frequent and you need to to be a good swimmer to enjoy the sea 9 no no for kids, but can be a great time for strong sporty teens as the body boarding is fun there!
Thsi said, Koh Chang is really a much more enjoyable and laid back island than most I visited in Thailand.
For your type of prices, try on Hat Tha Nam Beach (also called Lonely Beach), the Nature Beach Bungalows are the best, and are surrounded with Nature Rocks restaurant (best beach BBQ) and the book store/cybercafe.

Hi Frenchie,
Thanks for your information. In fact we are planning to go in early August! I think we will go to Ko Samet in that case, according to our book it is one of the driest islands. Fingers crossed!
We are basically looking to relax and chill for a week before the next school term begins. As teachers we therefore don't have much cash but I think we should be able to get something pretty nice for under HKD 200 per night by the looks of it.
Any recommendations for Koh Samet?!
