Caught Speeding: 62 Km over the limit

I was just caught speeding on the Lantau Link on my bike doing 142Kmph where the limit is 80 Km. Unfortunatly i'm in my probationary year and therefore capped at 70 Kmph during this time, so offically I was twice the speed limit.

I have been a car driver for over 10 years and had bikes before so I'm not a new driver or biker with no experience, but regulation require a 12 month probationary period.

I'm unable to locate any information on what sort of penatly I could be facing and to what level this could by.

The road was not busy and it was a clear dry day, so the speep although fast was not dangerously high for the road conditions, I'm hoping that goes in my favor. As a Brit I work in MPH not KMPH so that was 88Mph which isn't that fast, but how HK see that is another matter.

The police officer told me that I will receive a summons at a later date and I'm worried that with the way rules are followed here in Hong Kong, I could be in a lot of trouble.

1: Does anyone know what my max fine could be?

2: Should I use legal representation?

3: Anything I need to know?

I have already arranged sale on my bike as I'm 99.9% convinced I will at the least have my license taken away and the fact I know I like speed too much I think the safest option is to give up the bike.

Any info on this matter would be great.

I got caught doing 103Kmh in a 50 limit on my bike. The police round speeds down by 6Kmh which brought me below the magic 100.

I got a 3 month ban and HK3k fine, vey heavy.

I recommend you seek legal advice before you go in, or at the very least see the duty solicitor on the morning of your case to rep. you. It depends on the mag, but it seems that you have broken more than one law here.

Good luck dude.

droogiebear,

How do you equate a 3 month ban and HK3k fine as being "very heavy" in the described circumstances?

There are speed cameras all along there and police set up speed traps there every so often. Sometimes you can see they crouched down in the middle of the bridge. It's because the road is quite clear and as people tend to put their foot down - or open up the throttle - the police can be sure to nab a lot of road users. And don't try the "I got confused over MPH and KMHP" - it doesn't work.

I thought it was heavy compared to my friend who was caught for DUI after a bike accident. The mags gave him a one month ban and only a HK1k fine. He did take the duty solicitor with him. It was back in 2002 though.

Keep your options open. Firstly call the arresting officer to see what the normal fines are for

1) speeding >60

2)driving where you shouldn't have been.

He will tell you, then you decide.

Thanks for all the posts so far, I'm less worried then before but still a little scared over what the max fine could be.

When the officer spoke to me, he tool all my details down on the outside cover of the ticket book, never issued me with anything and at th time I forgot to ask his name & number, so I have no idea what's going on.

He could misplace the pad and all my details and I never get anything, well I'm hoping anyway.

There were 9 police officers around booking people and I guess that the Gwi on the bike in shirt and tie and 'P' plate was the pick of the day when clocked at 142 as they seem unprepared to get my detailed which is why he used the cover.

I was thinking fines would be like 1 year ban, $15k > $20k and possible suspended sentance are I broken a number of rules here. One I forgot to mentionwas missing 'P' plate on the back of the bike. I think I hit a total of 5 offenses.

1: 142 in an 80 zone

2: 142 when my limit is 70

3: In the outside lane on a 'P' plate

4: Missing the 'P' plate on the back of the bike

5: Changing lanes without signal when told to pull-over (he told me off for that)

Should I just pay 6 months rent up front, send the wife back to the UK and get my affairs in order while I await sentancing?

I doubt the penalty will be heavy, laws here in HK are quite relax. Even a drunk driver who killed 2 person only gets less then 2 yrs jail term. All u have to do is to say "guilty".
