If only these thousands of people were this passionate about real environmental issues rather than a handbag they can sell for a substantial profit on ebay.

You know, I was in 7-11 yesterday to buy a SCMP and a small juice...........automatic plastic bag and I said no twice. I had to take the stuff out finally to get her to understand.

The staff just do it like it's so normal. Bags for everything.

Yeah, and people falling all over each other, wasting time/ money for a bag of all things. Not sure if I should be disgusted at the complete lack of pretension to care for the environment or commend them for at least being honest.

when ppl design the eco-bag, they are to be more sensitive of daily usage. how am i suppose to put the meat fish newspaper together into the bag with blood dripping all over? should there be compartments of plastic bags inside and be detached and washable?

also, i still use plastic bags for newspaper, becos one time i carry it under my arm, i later found out all these ink printed on my white shirt, not to mention that everytime i touch a newspaper, i need to wash hands afterwards.

for those government officials who anti-plastic bag, give us an alternative solution and be more sensible.

thanks for the information, i didn't know hong kong ppl are the worst kind in terms of damaging the world.

another myth, making ur own lunch do not do any better than going out to lunch at the restaurant. Mass production consume less energy than individuals driving to park'n'shop, do groceries, go home turn on the air-con then gas to cook + exhaust fan, using more than enough detergent + water to clean the cooking units... not to mention ppl put inside the refrigerator before lunch then mirco-wave to re-heat.... and so on....

In Seoul, plastic bags must be paid for. It's nominal fee - around $1 HK dollar, but if you want a plastic bag, you pay for it. And most of the time, that seemingly small amount of money makes people reconsider the idea of a plastic bag. You see people carrying around plastic bags in order to buy things and lots of reusable recyclable bags - simply to avoid a $1 charge. MAKING you pay makes you think if you really really need it. I often find myself walking from a convenience store with 3 things in my hand, but managing just fine.

There was a recent report on how the Japanese are also trying to cut down on their usage of plastics - this is country where you wrap something and THEN put in an additional plastic bag.

i too dont like to use plastic bags. i always carry my own bags to super markets and wet markets. for fish and meat i carry one bag. ofcourse i wont dump it as it is with other stuff.

before i came to HK i used to live in europe. in the supermarkets there if you asked for a bag they look at you like you are something that crawled out from under a rock.

I remember one town in Germany protested in front of newly opened McDonalds and refused to let them open unless they ditched their Polyfoam containers and switched to paper.

In Hk folks used to look at me weirdly when i carry my much used cloth bag to bag my groceries. But of late (since 2 or 3 years) i see more and more people using cloth or non woven pp bags.

But still my BP goes up when i am returning from my morning walk and i see women carrying half a dozen or more plastic bags in each hand.

Many HK ppl dont cook lunch because all over the world for the chinese it is half hour window from market to table. (freshly slaughtered, freshly bought, and freshly cooked). it is why so many dont cook.

second most of them hold down 2 jobs or are out late nights. no one has energy to cook breakfast and lunch. theyjust grab something and are on the go.

weekends they relax and dont buy stuff and cook for the week so they can microwave it in the office.

my colleagues look at me aghast when they see me eating sunday cooked food on thu or fri afternoon.

they are also surprised it smells so good.

anyway... plastic bag (ab)users will die an extremely slow death.

And what does the 'I Am Not a Plastic Bag' come in......a plastic bag. How hypocritical is that!

FYI - we have teamed up with Banyan Tree Resorts and have sourced handwoven cloth from the hill tribes of Laos and will make AsiaXPAT 'No Plastic Bags' in Q4.

I just got the final sample the other day - they look great! And they fold up real nice so you can carry with you.

We are hoping to have 3000 pieces by the end of the year (it takes some time to weave the cloth...) Stay Tuned!!!

I told the gal in Wellcome yesterday, no bag as I had brought my own......while I was talking on the phone she had wrapped the bottle of bleach and the frozen spinach in bags..........I took them off and left them. You just have to watch every second. They just insist on giving us plastic bags.

I too tell them - no bags please, and like everyone else - more than once - so I take the stuff out and throw the bag on the floor! not nice I know, but.....

For obvious reasons, bottles of cleaning products are bagged separately and like bags used for chilled meat, should be discarded. I wouldn't assume the 'gals' at Wellcome understand your English either.

If supermarkets want to charge for bags, let them. Just tell me where that money is going instead of into their already huge margins. HK grocery chains have among the highest margins in the world.

For those thinking that by not using plastic bags you are saving the planet, be a little more realistic. I use plastic bags when necessary, no apologies, but I also reuse them for other things, unless used for cleaning products or meat.

HK is the most polluted developed city in the world, according to a recent issue of The Economist. If you want to make change, then protest to the authoritarian local govt. If they want to do something, and their pay-masters allow it, then it will be done. There is little HK's leaders can not do if they want to. Not like there is a real political opposition in HK to get in the way. Probably why so little has been done on the environment and why democracy will be 20 years away when the white paper (or whatever white-wash colour it will be) is published at year end.

I'm not a plastic bag fan either but am very curious - what would you guys use as bin liners if you stopped collecting plastic bags??

If I didn't collect plastic bags, I would probably buy them.... to use as bin liners, store collections of notes, for shoes in suitcase when traveling, umbrella in bag after it rains (so the rest of contents of nap sack don't get wet)...

I buy bin liners because our bin is too big for either the supermarket bags or the monthly supply of bags from our management office to fit. I usually return the management office bags to them, as I took the first lot they gave out and still use them occasionally.

I tend to alternate at the supermarket between using cloth bags and plastic, depending on when and where I happen to be shopping, ie if I stop off for a few things on the way home I get a supermarket plastic bag, but if I do a dedicated trip I use cloth. The few plastic bags I collect come in handy for wet umbrellas, shoes in suitcases, etc.

The thing that annoys me about using cloth bags is that the cashiers seem to think that because the bag can hold lots of heavy things, that it is necessary to fill it up. They tend to put all the milk, juice, wine, jars and tins in the same bag rather than spreading it out, resulting in one or two bags that are too heavy to lift and two light bags, rather than 4 bags that all weigh similar amounts.

EDUCATE YOUR MAIDS TOO! The one in front of me only had 5 items in 3 bags .. all her groceries could all have gone in her EMPTY carry bag over her shoulder!!

CHARGE FOR THE BAGS!! Great idea.

Answers to the original poster. I think they only wants the bag to show off and not helping the environment. As for plastic bags, i collect them cos i need it to put my rubbish in.
