Has anyone have the experience of taking their dog which has arrived from abroad from the cargo terminal themselves instead of using a pet agent? Where do you collect the dog, clear it from customs and the vet? How long is the process? Can I hire a van to take me there? Any information is really appreciated.

I have collected both of my dogs from USA to HKG myself. I don't think it's necessary to hire a pet agent unless you want hassel free from the paperwork and running around. Actually it's not that bad. *Personally, I think it's better for the pets because after a long flight, I think the first person they want to see is you not some random persons. But I do recommend that you have all the paperwork and a friend to drive to you to SuperTerminal 1 to collect your pet. First, when you drop off your pets in your origin, you'll get a "collection bill" from the airline. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T LOSE IT ! When you arrive HK, you'll need to go to Super Terminal 1 and pay the airline for "storage fee" (yes, even though for 30 mintues). Then, you go to the airline's cargo area to hand in your "collection paper." Then you walk back to the Hong Kong Fisheries and Argriculture department and have the official looks over all the documents (must have your rabies, health certificates + all other necessary documents). If all goes well, you and your pets are ready to go home.
All the "running around" is within the SuperTerminal 1. The whole process took me about 1.5 hours (it takes time for the HKFAD to wheel out your pets).
Yes, you can hire a van but it will cost you some money as they have to wait for you. So, bribe some friends in picking you up that day. Oh also, it saves you at least HK$3000 from hiring a pet agent.
Let me know if you need further info. Good Luck.

The process is easy, takes approx. 1 to 2 hrs. I have done it twice now, and 2nd. time was just under an hour and a half. (we used Cathay).
We took bus then taxi to the cargo terminal and a taxi home. Don't spend the extra cash, when not required. BUT, like others mentioned, be sure to have the waybill number and all information

Hi thanks for all your help. Most of my friend take the public transport so I probably need to hire a van to take me from Tung Chung to the cargo terminal. A friend is dropping off my pet at origin so I won't have the collection bill. Can it be faxed to me? Cokeca1125, where is Super Terminal 1?Is it far from the cargo area and HKFAD? Thanks guys for the help.

Yes, it can be faxed to you. As long as your name is the receiver and you have id. My mother sent mine pets for me from Canada and she emailed me a copy of the papr work. Even if u have the waybill number.

Hi I did it also at 11:30 pm Northwest lolol
Had a hired van waiting. 1 1/2 hours They bring them to the office and the vet gives them a rabies shot and liscence. You can do it, just make sure all your paperwork is in order!
