My daughter will be 3 in October (we are moving to Hong Kong in September) and I am very concerned that the move will be enough stress and change for her let alone throwing her into a new school environment straight away or even in January. Ideally, I would like to settle in, locate a nanny, let my daughter acclimatize to the nanny and learn some chinese and then go to school when she is four in 2008.
My questions are:
1. What is the equivalent of jr. kindergarten - and does it start at 4 yrs old?
2. Will not having gone to preschool at 3 affect her ability to get into a school when she is 4 yrs old?
Thanks!

I think you are wise keeping her home for a year. There are lots of educational things you can do with her and she'll not miss out at all.

I think it also depends on where you plan to send you child to school. Some schools do not have a reception class.
My son didn't start at the ESF until he was 5 years old. We sent him to a small community kinder when he was 3 years old.
The other issue I find is that my children tend to be bouncing off the walls if we don’t have things planned for the day. This seems to be the joy of apartment living, kinder was a very welcome relief for us all!

We sent our children to kindergarten because there were no other children their age to play with in our housing estate. As soon as they are old enough, most children in HK seem to be sent to kindergarten.
If you are considering a local kindergarten, expect all of the notices (and there are many!) to be written in Chinese.
Not sure where your daughter can learn Chinese before attending kindergarten.

an alternative to just "sending" her away to a kindy would be to find one that has you present there as well. Highgate House - a friend of mine highly recommends it as her own daughter, who was a bit shy and reserved, really enjoyed the time there - independent from her mom (although my friend was present) and really blossomed there. The teachers are supposed to be wonderful
