No luck on the "practical" section - any luck here:

I am going to Delhi on holiday and wondering if anyone can recommend good markets around the Red Fort. Mainly looking for Indian kaftans (swimsuit coverups)and pashminas.

Thanks

Huge bazaar - "Chandni Chowk" and another(cannot remember the name) around Connaught Place.

Baes on my personal experience, look for whatever you need at "Connaught Place" and if you cannot find it, then only proceed to the bazaars. Quality of goods may differ and also bazaars are extremely suffocating.

I find that similar goods in the 5 star hotel arcades can be bargained down and you will get good quality stuff.

As an example: In Bangalore, I asked for a best price for a full set of silk bedspread in downtown shops and later at the hotel arcade's shop, I purchased it at a cheaper price.

Also be diligent on yr safety and valuables. if you are alone, give the bazaar a miss.

Hope this help.

Don't eat ice in any form. You might be tempted because it is so hot and humid these days- DON'T be. One of my friend's had to go on IV- she ate icecream and got DelhiBelly!

CP area as FunchalPP suggested is your best bet for getting variety/ bargain/ quality. Red fort area is more for sight seeing if you are a tourist! You have to be a hard core Delhi-ite to really shop (bargain and quality etc) in Chandni Chowk. Take a ride in the cycle rickshaws in the narrow streets- its both crazy and fun.

It is difficult to differentiate a 100% pashmina vs a fake ( labels are fake); genuine one is expensive; range from USD 150- 500, depends on the size & intricate patterns.

My thought - don't think Bazaars/markets will offer 100% genuine & quality pashminas.

I'll go for
Dont have to worry whether I was cheated or had paid too much.

One test for pashmina and silk is to burn a thread and the smell is like burnt hair. Salesperson willing to prove genuine goods will want to demonstrate it.

I had paid USD15 for a cotton/silk shawl which works just as well and labelled 100% pashmina!

Drink some bottled water every hr as it is extremely dusty. Cover yr mouth with a hanky when walking on the road as the exhaust fumes/dust is real bad.

My hubby had a bad cough for the first few days.

Pady2k,

With regds to the pollution, please refer to published data before dismissing it as a story. ( or based on your own sentiment??)

In this thread, the replies are based on travellers experiences to share/reduce potential hazards for the poster.

India's pollution data are avail in the environment reports. (similarly other countries too)

Reported recently : - Delhi had the worst larger particulate matter indices among the Asian cities surveyed at 170 microgrammes per metre cube (µ/m3). The Asian urban average at 100 µ/m3 was five times the US average. However, these pollution indices excluded the impact of smaller PM2.5 particulates which were "everywhere, with a hemispheric presence". Indian cities do not gather PM2.5 data.
