child car seat for taxi in Australia?

In August, we are planning to spend a few days in Sydney, and plan to stay in an apartment in the CBD. Consequently, as we will be centrally located in Sydney, we are proposing to use taxis rather than hire a car (with child seat), as we have done in the past. I have heard that we will need a child car seat, if we plan to travel in taxis in Sydney with young children. Can anyone confirm if this is the case? [Our youngest child is 2 yrs old and we usually hire a car with a child seat, so we are not familiar with the requirements for travelling in taxis in Australia (in particular, Sydney).] Can anyone share their experiences about travelling in taxis in Sydney with very young children? Do we need to hire a child car seat?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, it's required by the law.

We travelled everywhere by taxi i Sydney (total regret.... we really wished we rented a car instead!)

Anyways, the taxis will provide the car seat for you. They seem to have them in the back of the trunk. HOwever, this is what people tells me, taxi drivers are therefore "reluctant" to pick up passengers holding a young child, b/c they don't want the hassle of having to install the car seat for you, and having to remove it once you get off.

Then the taxi did stop for us, it was fine. The car seat might be a little dirty too.
