Hi, Bit confused...My little one is in 3 yo kindy (we are now back in Aus and on school holidays). I would like to teach her to write her name (she just turned four). Do I teach her to write it with a capital for the first letter and then lower case or all upper case? Do I teach her to write the alphabet in upper case first??? Please help! Thanks :)

Teach lower case first - that is the recommend of a teacher at Woodlands Preschool that we were given recently. Apparently it is more difficult for kids to learn how to write properly if they do upper case first (dont know why). There are a number of resources on the web or a school will have one, showing you how the letter should be formed (eg where you should start the letter etc) so they move properly to joined script when the time comes.

In the US, the standard is D'nelian writing taught - as the transition from print to cursive is much easier.

this is a great website that allows you to custom print worksheets with the desired lettering.

Hi Georgie10,

I'm a teacher and trained in Asutralia. I would recommend you teach her to write her name the way it should be written. Begin with the capital letter for the first letter of her name and write the rest in lower case.

Try to get hold of the handwriting books. The ones by Nightingale were always very good with kids and provided many tracing activities for them. They begin at preschool level.

Also, try to get hold of the thicker pencils in a triangular shape to ensure good grip.

Good luck!

By the way, I PMed you regarding the Cathay / Qantas flight. Thanks!
