I would really appreciate any advice anyone can give me about my IBM laptop.

It will not boot up today and has an error message saying: No boot filename and Operating System not found.

Is there anything I, or a shop, can do or is the hard drive broken for good? Please send me any suggestions and/or recommendations of a shop that could help me.

Many thanks!

You should have received a "recovery disk" when you purchased the laptop. Put it in when you start the machine, hopefully it will boot up the computer for you, and you can run the diagnostics programs to find the problem.

I doubt its ur harddisk problem. It's ur OS that is corrupted. Try installing a new OS but DO NOT replace the existing OS file and put it in another folder. That way u can save up all ur documents in it before doing a full formatting n installation all over if u wanna.

If ur using WinXP, the default folder shld be called WINDOWS, so create another folder called WINXP and ur PC will boot up again. And if ur reformatting ur PC after doing backup, make sure to create partition and keep ur docs in a separate partition so if it corrupts again, just reinstall the OS and ur data won't be lost unless ur HDD died on u.

Gd Luck!

Ask a techy friend for help. S/he can also use a linux live-cd to check that your data files are there - and maybe even back up things that are of special interest - lest you lose everything on the reinstall.

It will never boot up cos ur boot file is corrupted. Insert ur WinXP CD into the drive and power up, then follow the on-screen instructions. Or get a techie to do it for u as ldldjr said.
