Surest Way of getting into Tibet

I plan to travel to Tibet next month. I understand that I would need to obtain a special visa for Tibet and that I'd have to part of a group. None of the guide books I've referenced offer current information about getting a visa. It all seems so sketchy-fakes and scam artists are all out on the make.

is this real? Has anyone travelled to Tibet? If so, how did you go about getting there and getting a visa?

It is a little more complicated than say a week in Thailand. We've just returned from a month there taking the direct train from Guangzhou-Lhasa and cycling on to Kathmandu.

We found best source of independant info on what you need to get there is Lonely Planet's 'Thorn Tree Tibet section' -Entry requirements have been tightened since April following a protest at Everest Base Camp and 'independant' travel is now quiet difficult,(unless you hold a SAR passport)

If you want more details on the agent we used who sorted our train ticket and Lhasa permit feel free to PM me.

I visited Tibet alone in May. I booked my flights and organised my permit through CITS in Chengdu. No problem.
