Hi All, I'm living in Guangzhou and my 7 year old daughter attends a Chinese school. I would like to teach her at home and was wondering if anybody knows of any education material available in Gzh to teach English Phonetics (or is it Phonics!?) Any suggestions? I just want to teach her step by step to spell words and read.

Thanks Ruth, I do that and it works. I just think I should teach her how to spell out the word by herself.

Hello Aries477, we too are thinking of sending our kids to a Chinese School... Which school are you sending your kids to and what is it like for them? Would really appreciate your comments.

hi jemtomfrance, it appears you are based in Hong Kong & we were based in Guangzhou. I don't know about the schools in Hong Kong. My daughter attended Ling Nan School in Guangzhou. We have left China about a year ago & is now living in Sydney.

Btw, Ruth if you are still around & reading this forum...I knew there must be a method to teaching kids to read. My daughter picked it up so quickly because at school there is a system. Starting with the beginners books & every book ads a few new words sytematically. She now reads quite well.

Must say though she lost all her Chinese & now has to attend Chinese lessons. Sad but true it didn't take her long to forget it but I'm sure it'll come back now that she's interacting with the Chinese kids again.

Jemtomfrance sorry I can't be of more help.

Actually we are originally from HK but now is living in Guangzhou so you did answer my question. Everyone else around me thinks that it is a bad idea to send my kids to a Chinese school as they say it is just to harsh. I need a more positive advise from someone who's actually been there.

Hi again, ok now I get it. Personally, I felt it wasn't that bad. Ling Nan is a small school compared to other Chinese schools. They have the normal Chinese classes & the Chinese/English classes that most foreign kids attend.

The only problem is they don't teach much English except spoken English which is really useless for foreigners (English speaking). They were very helpful in the sense that I could find a teacher to assist my daughter after school with homework. And yes, they are a bit harsh...I had to tell the Maths teacher off for hitting my daughter on the head with a book. But if you let them know how you feel about certain things they are more careful about what they do.

I must add my daughter's maths is very good & I'm sure you know how hard they Chinese kids have to work & they get loads of homework too.

At the end of the day I guess it depends what is important to you.

Btw, not sure where in Guangzhou you are located but Ling Nan is just behind South China Normal University.

Good luck!
