Taxi - Stroller Surcharge

ORIGINAL POST
Posted by TayTay 19 yrs ago
Today we were charged $5 for putting our stroller in the boot/trunk of the taxi.

It's happened about 3 times in the numerous times we've taken a taxi with our little one. The first time we didn't know whether we should be charged or not, so we paid; another time, we challenged the charge and he waived it; and today, he stood firm and insisted we pay. All the other times we've taken a taxi, we've never been charged.

It's not about the money.... just want to know our rights here.

There is a sign on each taxi's backseat door. With the only exception of a wheelchair, and items inside the taxi cabin, anything in the trunk, is $ 5. 00 a piece. That's what I recall.

If the taxi driver doesn't charge you, it's a favor. If he charges, it's by his right.

Many of them won't charge it if you get to the trunk and he doesn't have to take it out or put it in. If he helps you with it, most likely, you will have to pay for the extra.

He didn't help put it in or take it out. He just pulled his little lever to open the boot.

So do you think I will annoy the taxi driver if I squeeze my big stroller in the passenger seat to avoid getting charged..... JOKE!

No. No charge for stroller. We did not know the first time when we travel with our stroller, we paid extra 5$ but the taxi driver said it is FOC. and we tried it again the next time, the same answer given (diff. taxi) so we know there is no charged of stroller at the boot of Taxi! Ya, true, the driver won't help so we have to do it :) :(

In the six months since our baby was born, we've never been charged for putting the stroller in the trunk. However, I've been charged for putting lighter items in the back, like shopping, etc. I do think they have the right to charge for the stroller, but most don't as a favor...

ms cheerful, it's stated very clearly that with the exception of wheelchairs, there is a charge for every item you put in the trunk of a taxi. Take a look at the website I linked above.

Wheelchair is a necessity. Stroller (as hard as it is to believe)... is really an optional thing.

Really don't know much about that. We just had a taxi trip with no charge again and tomorrow we will do another as we need to bring Baby for check up so i will ask again. for us so far almost every week we travel from Kowloon station to TST, no charge so really not sure....

I expect that it is no different to being charged for a suitcase - ie: $5 a piece. Check the dimensions of the stroller though as it goes by size. I always make sure that I get the taxi driver to lift the suitcase in and out of the trunk so that I am at least getting my $5 worth! You should do the same with the stroller if you are charged at the end (at least to get it out for you). If you put it in yourself I guess it is less likely that you will be charged but I agree with Katetam, I think they are entitled to charge it.

I was never charged when I put the stroller in the front seat. Taxi drivers never seemed annoyed by it either.

Taytay, don't need to joke about it. Seriously, just put your stroller in the front seat and for sure you won't get charged for it. That is what we've always done as well.

Hi TayTay, OK. I have read the instruction and asked the taxi driver yesterday when bringing baby for check-up. The taxi driver said only when we carry a stroller and put it at the boot without baby then we need to pay the $5 charge as it considered a piece of lugage, if not, if it is keep in front seat or baby and stroller, there is no charge. Seriously, we travel by taxi almost every week from Kwl Station to TST with baby and no charge. Hope this help.

Have a good day.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. Understand the situation a little better now. Will try the passenger seat option next time and see what they say. Will keep you posted on any developments.
