Hong Kong Driving Test

ORIGINAL POST

I am an expat needing to take the HK written and road test in order to get my HK driver's license. Has anyone out there gone through the process? Also, I'm confused about something with the road test: How am I going to take the test with my vehicle if I don't have a license? I have a learner's license, but I can't drive my car TO the test without a full license right?

When I took my road test, I had to hire a car from my driving school. My instructor met me at the test site with the car. The car being used for the road test needs to have a special insurance and the extra foot brake for the passenger side. Any driving school should be able to rent you a car for this purpose.

If I were you I would contact the Transport Department (who, in my experience, have always been helpful and efficient) for advice about your particular circumstances. Also, there are some earlier posts on HK driving tests here if you do a search, including helpful link(s) to the TD website that may contain the info you need.

About the car: the instructor/driving school will usually include the rental of the car on the test date.

Agree with Saikunga: check with TD, if the driving license of your country is recognized in HK, you don't need to apply a new one, you can simply get one by showing your valid driving license. You can get your HK driving license in a matter of 1 or 2 weeks time.
