Hi moms, (esp hkchoichoi)
I gave 1 split peas for the past 2 days, today i gave him 2 cubes and he got red dots around his lips and cheeks after an hour of eating it, definetely it's reaction to split peas as i haven't introduced any new food. I noticed few red dots too for the past 2 days but i thought it is nothing.
Question - should i NOT give him split peas again ever, and throw the remaining cubes?

hey honeypie, i started to read regarding solid food... can't remember which website said that those legumes or some does cause bb to have allergy. it is my turn soon to find out what Isaac can and cannot have, exciting time ya!

Just his antibodies working overtime against the protein. You can try to introduce the food again in a few weeks or wait till he is 18 months old. You may find it's best to wait till 18 months for all foods with higher levels of protein. By then his intestines will be better primed to handle the protein.
Generally speaking, most food allergies in babies are gone by the time they are three years old. So, unless he is going into anaphylactic shock within minutes of eating the food, you don't have to say never to that food.

Try a thin split-pea soup instead.
Some children can't manage legumes till two or three. So you might have to wait.
What about hummus or avocado? Both are excellent sources of protein.
Is he okay with soy?

Hi Claire, he is 9 months old. I haven't tried soy yet, i have a list from the allergist that i follow strictly since he had eczema when he was younger. The list says split pea soup, but i didn't make it as a soup, how do i do that? just put more water? Thanks.

There are so many more foods to be introduced, why hurry? I'd shelve split peas in any form until after three years of age. I'd also back off on legumes in general, maybe wait a few months before trying the next one. Challenging the immune system before it's ready will heighten the possiblity of the allergy. Just move the split peas to the "wait awhile" list and go to the next food. Talk about this at the next well baby visit.

Hi Meiquoren, I'm not in a hurry to introduce legumes, fact is, it's one of the lists by the allergist so i'm just following to the letter. Apparently, this is one of the foods that causes less allergy, but my fault too for not doing it as a soup. My baby had eczema so it's a different story, i don't just give legumes or any food without doctor's consent.
hkchoichoi and crj, is it true that legumes challenges the immune system? yes, we know we are followers of Ruth, but just want to hear your opinion as i know you've been there.

my kids haven't had problems with legumes. in fact, both kids took them both really well. In terms of allergies, I've only had one thing that caused a reaction in my younger daughter -there are have been two occasions where she has inadvertently had peanuts - and both times it caused a reaction - but the second incident, which was when she was older, seemed to be far less.
There are a lot of theories on what CAUSES an allergy, how to prevent, how to avoid (I am severely allergic to cashew nuts and pistachios but all other nuts are fine...weird, eh?) and so it's not really clear. But IF baby had a reaction, I'd avoid it and see what doctor says.
keep the peas - you can store it in the freezer and wait a few more months (post 1 year) and give it another whirl.

thanks hkchoichoi, i'll experiment on another kind of peas, allergist says lima and millet next. I don't know where to get lima beans, can't find it in P&S.

You may find lima beans is a north American term for what we call butter beans in Europe. You can buy them dry or tinned. Wellcome has tinned ones on its website (item #560961). The ParknShop site brings up one item for butter beans but they are actually chickpeas (?!?).

Have you tried lentils? Here's an easy lentil 'stew' recipe which is appropriate for a 9-month old.
Lentil Stew
Ingredients
25g dried red lentils
1 small potato, peeled and cubed
1/2 tsp tomato purée or tomato juice
1 small carrot, cubed
Method
1. Place all ingredients in saucepan and just cover with water.
2. Bring to the boil slowly and simmer until all liquid is absorbed and vegetables are softened.
3. Cool a little and blend until smooth and creamy.
