Homemade baby food- green beans & asparagus

Hi there,

I'm trying to make home made baby food- specifically green bean puree and asparagus puree, but I'm having a problem getting these veggies to puree (can do carrots, broccoli, etc. no problem). I steamed the green beans and asparagus per a baby cookbook I have (about 15 mins), but when I put them in the food processor they only become chopped and work their way up the side of the food processer bowl- they are nowhere near pureed. Can you tell me...Am I not cooking them long enough, not adding enough water or not cooking a large enough amount or something else entirely. Suggestions welcome!

are you using a chopper or a blender? at this stage, i think a blender will make better purees.

for beans, it's steam for 10-12 minutes, when i puree i put a water to make it to a paste like. I just did it now.

This is the first time I'm using a food processor- the food processor has the blender blade option on it. The beans just get kicked around in the bowl, with a few cuts here and there. Maybe I didn't put enough food in the bowl so nothing is really catching on the blades?? (I the blender previously with the asparagus and had the same unsatisfactory outcome...) Honeypie, what are you using to puree the beans?

I use the Braun handheld blender, most of the moms here use this, the best. I know what you mean with your food processor, get the braun, better. Easy to clean too.

Yes, the braun hand held blender, great for doing small amounts like baby foods.

thanks. will get a handheld blender today- also sounds a bit easier to clean than my food processor, according to a little research on the internet.

sounds like what you had was just a food chopper - those won't get the food into a smooth puree, more suitable when baby is older and you want to introduce chunky bits into her diet....so it will be useful eventually, just not now so don't throw it away just yet!

yes, as many mums on this forum will tell you, the braun hand held blender is absolutely fab - inexpensive and does a great job. and it's also great for making smoothies with plain yoghurt and fresh fruits for you and baby next time!
