Child with a lisp

ORIGINAL POST

My 5 yr old speaks with a lisp and cannot pronounce the "S" properly, as his tongue seems to get in the way and ends up making a "th" sound instead. When I ask him to correct it, he gets very upset and says he cannot do it. Does anyone know a good speech therapist?

Mines the same and i have to say it is slowly disappearing. You'll find at primary school that teachers will work with him and help him, and this may well do the trick.

My 4 year old the same. Thought I would wait a couple of years before doing something about it!

I am a Speech-Language Therapist, and can tell you a bit about lisps. 's' tends to be one of the later sounds to develop, and can develop naturally up to the age of about 7 or 8yrs ('s' in clusters, such as 'sl', 'spr' etc can take longer to develop).

As treatment is usually quicker with younger children, some parents choose to have speech-language therapy when their children are 5 or 6yrs, rather than wait to see if it resolves spontaneously. However, our normal recommendation is to wait until 7 or 8 yrs before starting treatment.

In the meantime, you can listen out for any times your child uses 's' and if you hear it, you can point this out to him (i.e. "Hey, I just heard a great 's' sound - well done").

Dear Vowell, Thanks so much for your reply. It's settled my anxiety. Would it be possible to provide me with the details of your clinic, in case his lisp doesn't go away when he reaches 6-7yrs old. Cheers.
