Another marriage question, sorry!

So, I am a British national and next year will marry a Chinese man. I understand what we must do to get married and getting married in Beijing will probably make some parts easier. I was just wondering what happens afterwards. Do i still need to get visas every year? What happens when we have a baby and i can't work? Do i need to get a visitors visa? Is it possible to get a permanent residency after 5 years? It's so confusing and the internet makes me more confused!

Under normal circumstances, you can get a one-year "L" tourist (visitors) visa, but it does not allow you to work. These one-year visas can be renewed annually for like terms. If you want to work, you need to go through the process of work permit / residence permit.

Permanent residency is available after having been married for 5 years and having lived continuously in China for 5 years subsequent to marrage and just prior to applying for PR. However, just the 5 years of marriage and residency are not the only requirements that you must meet and the vast majority of applications are rejected.
