Singapore flat advice

Hi,

I am relocating to Singapore soon and wonder if anyone has any advice on finding a flat there. The company has an agent which will help us find a place in our "modest" budget, but I am not sure they will give the best or only advice on flats - maybe they represent only one area... any Singapore specific advice?

I relocated to Singapore a year ago from London, Remax was the agent I used. OK, although you have to be v specific with them exactly what you want, they showed me a lot of crap as well as good stuff.

Would recommend the Robertson Quay area - v central, lively if you want it to be yet not as pricey as the ridiculously expensive Orchard Road area

Agree - Orchard Road has decayed and turned "decadent" by the number of ladies/ men of the night prowling the road. But of course, it's quite fun for some.

Rent has gone up on average 50% in the last half year and top end has busted the HK standards.

Roughly it goes like that:

Newton/ Robertson/ Tanjung Rhu - single, childless couples

Bukit Timah/ Holland - school going kids families as there are good schools in this part - near Bukit Timah Hill and Botanic Gardens

East Coast - families who like to be near the sea regardless of children - there are schools here too but not international schools which are mainly to the west

West Coast - ditto East Coast for say 20% below rent because of industrial area and suspected poorer air quality

Down the line

Your have your local hubs where private condos are interspersed with public housing, which means you have your cinemas and big shopping complexes right at your doorstep. Plus of course the MRT/ subway.

Hope this works for you. Hve fun.

I'm doing the reverse - relocating to HK. But have to keep my flat here else would gladly offer to rent to you at today's crazy rents. :)

Have you tried posting this on the Singapore Asiaxpat (Practical) site, rather than the HK one?

Sent you a PM on housing guide. This will give you an idea on the locality & the rental.

My recommendation is to be near school (if you have school going children) & near MRT(if spouse is not working).

Shopping is easily accessible using MRT/taxi.

Based on my personal relo, the company's appointed agent will send to me a couple of wks ahead, a list of available locality based on the given budget & company's criteria (eg. safety, travelling time etc). This helps to narrow the choice & decision making.
