Very Dry Skin

ORIGINAL POST

My baby has severe dry skin (scaly and patchy on legs and arms) as well as dry itchy scalp. The pediatrician said it isn't eczema yet and to try Oilatum and Physiogel. I tried both but the skin is still very dry. We have bowls of water out when the air conditioner is on (which is always), but it hasn't helped.

I would like to try and rectify this, especially if I can prevent it from becoming eczema.

Should I take baby to see a dermatologist? Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thank you.

You can get pure glycerin from any chemist. Mix some of that with Aqueous cream, and do this as often as you need to. Before applying dampen the skin with some warm water on cotton wool, to moisten it and the trap the moisture by applying glycerin and aqueous cream. Works wonders.

Thanks firsttimemom.

Any suggestions on what to bathe baby with? We have tried Aromababy, Mustela regular and Stelatopia, and now Oilatum, and non are that great. We also tried Stelatopia for the hair and the Aromababy shampoo, and they just dried baby's scalp/hair.

For bathing, you can try using Aqueous cream applied all over the body and rinsing out with water.

For the very dry scaly skin on the legs, you can try paraffin wax which can be bought from Watson's Pharmacy. My bubs was prescibed this from a dermatologist. And it worked really well, even though it was very oily & messy. But the scaly hard skin on the legs recovered in 1 week.

Thanks for the suggestions for the bath and skin. Any suggestions on the dry itchy/flaky patches on the scalp? I don't think it is cradle cap (no oily big flakes and not yellow), looks more like flaky dry white skin. Thanks again.

I add QV oil to the children's bath, in addition to QV cream it is very good.

I would strongly suggest that you visit a dermatologist. Skin conditions for babies changes very quickly. An early visit to a dermatologist will keep things under control.

Hope your bub feel better soon.

Use Bioderma products for your baby. Do a search in this forum, you will find lots of information about it.

My kids both now are "healed" (cross my fingers) because of using this line. It's pricey, but worth it.

If you baby is under 1 year old, don't bother going to a dermatologist unless:

Skin has infection, oozing with yellow discharges or bleeding.... anything DONE to baby's skin is worse than just leaving it alone. After 1 year old, your baby's skin can improve significantly IF you don't tamper around with it, and try all kinds of products that are on the market.

Mumbee, I ONLY use aqueous cream for bathing, even baby's hair. Its a natural cleanser, and lathers quite nicely.

My baby is so allergic, I cannot even wash his clothes with soap. My helper handwashes his clothes, yes, even poo nappies, in plain water, and then boils everything for 30 minutes.

I also use neem oil and neem water, but thats to treat his eczema. If you baby has not reached that stage, just blitz the dry skin with glycerin and aqueuous cream, I promise you it works. I tried EVERYTHING, mustella, QV, bioderma, steriods, everything. ADAMS Aqueous is the most gentle and likely to suit even the most sensitive skin. Note that he was allergic to other brands of Aqueous cream... ugh.

Baby now has totally normal skin, he's been eczema free for a few months now.

Good luck!

firsttimemom,

where can we find the Adams Aqueous cream?

thanks.

also, i never thought that LO might be allergic to the laundry soap. we use 1 capful of Vigor Baby Detergent with a couple of tablespoons of Napisan per every load in the front-load washer. is there a gentler detergent or combination of cleansers that will clean and disinfect?

i am not so worried about disinfecting her clothes as disinfecting any germs left in the machine from our clothes (which we wash with Dettol laundry sanitizer and non-bio detergent)

Any chinese chemist should have it, and also watsons and mannings. But sometimes it is out of stock. A nice tub of it costs 30 bucks. QV is more than 4 times that...

thanks firsttimemom. when you use the aqueous cream and glycerin, how did you prevent it from rubbing off on your son's clothes or on the sofa and floor? also how do you (or others) prevent baby from rubbing his hands on the treated areas of the skin and then eating it? my baby seems to love to suck/chew on hands.

Just rub it in really really well, round and round. I dont use heaps, but I give the bubs a nice massage, and put a bit extra on the really dry spots after I've rubbed his whole body. And then he's OFF rolling around on our quilt or rubbing his face in my nice tee-shirts!

I think aqueous and glycerin is safe for babies if they chew their fingers, just dont put heaps and heaps. You'll find as the days pass and the skin gets more normal you wont need to use as much.

When baby was at his worst I used to rub this stuff in every 1-2 hours, every day! I dont regret a minute of it.

Cheers

PS, I still use the neem oil, its fantastic. Its horribly bitter, not an inducement to chew fingers! LOL!

Hi

I live in shanghai my first born had eczema, with the hard water and the cold air it got worst.

The best solution is if they have soft water pump that you may want to search for. Also if they do not have a soft water pump, I would put alittle salt for bathing. It kills all the bateria. If thats to harsh for you , then I would suggest a oatmeal bath that maybe someone can send you a package of .. Keep the skin moist with unwanted perfume. If you wear perfume stop. It can lead to asthma. There is no way to cure eczema, you will waste your time going to a dermotologist, they will say it is genetic. The best way is rub alot of uncented baby lotion. Basically like vaseline, but they are other brand that has somewhat like vaseline. Lotion can hurt the skin.

step 1

The water should not feel hot nor redden the skin because hot water dries skin. Dry, irritated skin can cause a flare-up and worsen existing eczema.

use dove soap to clean baby, do not bath everyday use a sponge if you have too.

The more oil a moisturizer contains the more effectively it protects against moisture loss. Moisturizers that come in ointment form contain the most oil because an ointment, by definition, consists of 80% oil and 20% water. This water-in-oil emulsion forms a protective layer on the skin and makes it more “moisturizing” than creams and lotions. Ointments are especially beneficial when humidity is low. Ointments should not be used on areas of the body that tend to get hot and sweaty
