Fax Spam

Does anyone have a problem with receiving spam on their fax machine? I learnt to live with email spam but spam coming through via fax ties up my phone line, wakes up sleeping children and is an absolute waste of paper.


Is there anything that can be done about this?

This is absolutely rdiculous for each of us to go to all this length and suffer such inconvenience to enjoy a little bit of privacy that ALL modern countries take forgranted.


It seems, in HK, the legal system is so backwards that it fails to recognise privacy as a basic right so I (and many others) have taken action - RESPOND. Flood them with faxes of the garbage they send out and call them with prank calls sending them on wild goose chases.


Many people I know will fax rubbish to the phone numbers that are listed on the fax spams. Since phone calls are free in HK I set my fax to redial on failure and fax to any phone number that appears on the spam.


Some will block incoming faxes on these numbers so it's not 100% effective.


When I, my wife, children have time we make a prank call requesting their service at a fake address. By ourselves we may cause a bit of inconvenience but if everyone who is annoyed with this farce did this the senders of fax spam would quickly realise it is not possible to separate real business from prank calls.


Just think about it, if say 10 people read this thread and calls up the spam sender in the next few days requesting for their services at a bogus address it would quickly cripple a company by sending their employees on futile house calls. Each call that we make will take a few mintues but will waste hours of time/costs for these companies.


Now project this to the number of AsiaXpat readers who are frustrated at fax spam and imagine the result - very quickly companies will learn that by sending spam they will generate a volume of calls and requests that will take up resources but will not generate revenue.


Let's stop whinging about this and do something about it. Spare 5 minutes a day on your way to the work, during a cigarrette break and make fax spam a useless tool for irresponsible companies.

few years back, it was a nightmare to have my fax/phone ring after midnight. The only option I could see for myself, was to just change the number.
