Hi all..
I have two sons, aged 3 and 1 year old. Sometimes I feel that I couldn't understand my eldest son. He throws tantrums quite easily and very attached to me. I supposed he has passed his 'terrible two' period, as he is now already 3 years old. I am trying to get books for my personal references about how to raise my sons to become a good person. Anyone can suggest me books on this?
Thanks a lot ya!

It's called "Raising Boys" by Steve Bidulph.
It is very insightful - just like raising a son!
He has also written "The secret to raising happy children" they are both worth a read.

Thanks Bizeemama. I will try to find those two books in bookshop here. I did google search and found "The Everything Parent's Guide to Raising Boys" by Cheryl L Erwin. Any comments on this book?

DONT buy this book that I found in HK "Why Boys are Different" by Dr. Bonnie Macmillan. I found it extremely negative about boys and I think the author deserves a good slap.
Loved Steve Bidulph's book, in fact I am reading it again at present. Very positive, very enlightening.
Have you tried getting your boy(s) involved in sports? I am a very firm believer that SPORT is everything for a boy - exercise, health, discipline, positive mentors, good peer groups, good mental health and able to de-stress. Team sports teach excellent social skills to kids and martial arts are great for confidence and discipline. HK has amazing sports facilities for young kids. In Singapore, I have already enrolled my boy into a football class and as soon as he's 3 he'll be doing Tae Kwon Do and Rugby. You may think I am crazy because he's only now 22 months but since he started playing football he has transformed into a very confident little boy.

mrs m,
which football school have you enrolled your boy into? i've looked at some of the schools and they only take kids from 3?

I take my boy to Socatots in Turf City. He goes to the 2-year old class. There is also a class for 6 months-2 years. It's awesome.

Hi Mrs M,
Thanks for the reply. Bought Steve Biddulph's book yesterday (Secrets of Happy Children; couldn't find Raising Boys). Indeed, it is a very good book. Loved it too.... I agree with you that sport is good for children, but always think that my sons are too young for it. Since my eldest one just turned 3 y.o., I have considered of joining him in football class but haven't found any in Bangkok :))

Are you a member of a club? Maybe they have some sports classes? 3 is the best age to start kids at sport. It is really good to get them into the routine and make it the norm for them, a way of life.

how does a 22-month-old play football? or is this glorified playgroup?

Glorified playgroup or not, my son loves it. It's pretty similar to what you'll find David Beckham doing in his training sessions - relay runs, running around obstacles and scoring goals, balancing beanbag (in DB's case a ball) on head, shoulders, back, knees. Learning to kick the ball with different parts of the foot, drop and kick, kicking ball to knock over skittles etc. There's lots of other things included where the kids are learning - lots of focus on colours, counting taking turns. It is not playing football, but learning to handle a ball and getting other skills whilst he is at it. Your post sounds cynical but that's OK. My son loves it, others may not.
