Voluntary work and Visitors Visas

ORIGINAL POST

Can I do voluntary work (i.e. unpaid work for a charity) whilst I am here on my 6 month visitors visa? I've looked on the immigration dept. website and it's not particularly clear.

Thanks!

No, you cannot. Even to do volunteer work, you MUST have a valid work visa.

From the ImmD website:

"Visitors are not allowed by law to take up employment (paid or unpaid)..."

Thanks Claire, I guess even if you are only doing a few hours a week and not signing anything to do with terms and conditions you are still an employee?

No you're not an employee in those circumstances, but you are classified a volunteer engaged in unpaid employment. Splitting hairs, I know. But the good news is that if you approach the Immigration Dept and ask nicely I think they would grant special permission provided that the charity is registered and has a good reputation, plus both parties sign a declaration that there will be no payment for the work undertaken. Good luck.
