For a basic home first aid kit (in no particular order):

A first aid manual

Supply of individually wrapped plasters in various sizes

Thermometer (preferably digital, ear one if your budget stretches to it)

Large and medium-sized sterile dressings to cover wounds (e.g. Melolin which doesn’t stick)

Adhesive tape (e.g. Micropore)

Adhesive elastic tape (e.g. 3M Nexcare)

Analgesic tablets/capsules

Antihistamine cream

Antihistamine tablets

Petroleum jelly

Antiseptic solution

Triangular bandages

Safety pins in a variety of sizes

Crepe bandages

Sterile non-fluffy, absorbent gauze

Sterile cotton wool balls

Round-ended scissors

Tweezers

Surgical-type gloves

Antiseptic wipes (alcohol free)

Eyewash solution

Calamine lotion

Anti-itch cream

Cold/hot gel pack

And a darn large box! LOL!

thanks claire...that's one big box!

went down to the pharmacy this morning and they had a ready pack family first aid kit...it's abit more basic than what you recommended so i'll look through and then add more as necessary.

I left out the stretcher!

Seriously though, this list covers a lot of eventualities, most of which I hope never happens. And you can usually find other things in the home as substitutes. Even santitary napkins can be used to stem a cut.

yes, which is why i thought to get a basic kit and build on it because if it came to a really serious situation, i would be off to the A&E instead of trying to play nurse at home!

sanitary pad to stem a cut, very interesting! just like they say tampons are good for stemming nose bleeds? :)

You're right, and not just for the nose, even cuts. Vodka can be used as a disinfectant for cuts. An egg cup secured over an injured eye. A pillow case to encase an arm. A bag of frozen peas for a bruise. And of course Pak Fa Yeow for everything else!
