teething interrupting speech??

Does anyone know if there is a correlation between very slow teethers and children whose teeth cause them a lot of pain and children who are slow to develop clear words?

My son is 20 months old and I am curious if there is a relationship between his lack of words and his teething agony? He has been in pain for months rubbing his gum for his 8th tooth to come down, but it still hasn't broken the skin.

He speaks his own language but does not make many sounds that sound like real words yet.

I know of no correlation between this and late talking. I am the son of a 5 year old extreme late talker. If you are worried about the lack of words - do message me offlist.

A typical 20-month-old has a spoken vocabulary of about 12-15 words, though many children have far more. If you are concerned regarding your child's speech it would be advisable to see a speech therapist for assessment.

Okay well he just hasn't learned to speak the same way as my first son. Instead of saying lots of individual words and doing it the typical way. He's been popping out whole sentences in the last week so I guess he's more of a "global" language learner than a "linear" learner to use the adult terms for it.

So far he's said "go out, go out"

"coming" pointing to himself

And "what is dat"
