Feeding fruit pieces

My son has turned 1 year old and recently he does not like eating fruit in pieces. He used to eat fruit in pieces around 9 months and he suddenly shuts his mouth real tight or spits them out again. If the fruit are pureed he will eat them but I do not want him to go back the pureed fruit way as at his age he should be picking up his food with his fingers which he does but not fruit. How can I encourage him to eat fruit pieces again?

bbvv - ours did the same at around 1 year - no pieces all of a sudden - turned that 8 teeth (side ones) were coming through at the same time - gums were very swolen, so that made sense - had to puree everything for 1 year old babies for about a month!! now they are back to eating pieces - pls check your boy's gums, this might be your answer! And just puree until the teeth have come through!

my almost 17 month old (who used to feed himself bowls of fruits) has started rejecting fruits except for bananas (which he scoffs down).

it's been going on for about a month - all his usual favourites of watermelon, rock melon, honeydew, mangoes, peaches, etc. we have been buying all the yummy fruits for him, my husband hangs around the highchair hoping for my son to share some.

so this sudden no fruit strike is surprising to me. but what i have noticed is that he seems to be making some gesture to complain that the fruits are too cold - not sure if he is teething again and therefore his gums are sensitive, which is why he's happier to eat soft pears and bananas which i don't refrigerate?

anyway, just to share my current experience, hope this is all just a phase!

Thanks for all your advices.

waffle_hk My son can pick up food with his fingers - he eats everything except fruit - tried with grapes yesterday and he only touches it with his lips and not eat it. Maybe it is to do with the texture. He can easily eat biscuits, rice cakes - all the dry stuff.

simplythebest - we have given yoghurts to him before - not exactly a favourite food of his and I end up finishing it off for him most of the time - realised that he does not like yoghurt straight from the fridge - maybe too cold. Will try and add some soft fruit pieces in them next time at room temperature.

Checked his gums yesterday - he has 7 teeth now and I thought the 8th one would be coming up but no sight of any white bits nor swollen gums. I though teeth are supposed to come up in pairs. It has been a month like this now.

At the moment I am giving him pureed fruit as I don't want him to miss out on them.

Our 18 month is similar we just figured it was a phase and are not worried.

He has a banana and bowl of mango with some papaya every morning... but won't do other fruits... this meal often ends with a chant of 'more mango, more mango'.... but we think it is b/c he likes to say it (try, it's fun!)

He used to try anything, now he won't...

Oh and what's funny is he won't try an orange or grapefruit - but when I have a 100% fresh juice - he loves drinking mine - haha

try smoothies - throw the fruit in a blender, add some milk, serve in a cup with a straw.

ah crj, what a relief to know i'm not alone!

husband reckons there's too much my son wants to do instead of being stuck on a highchair eating fruits. it's like once he has his cereal, he wants to get down.

but funny thing is, he will eat the fruits when he thinks it's not for him. say i come out to the living room with some fruits, he will want them, thinking it's really just for me. so say this morning, he danced and ate his morning fruits. i really don't like him playing and eating but i might give in for now....

Try making them into a mini smoothy so he can drink them. Or try freezing them or keeping them warm instead.

Trial and error...sighhh!

Toddlers like to binge on one food at a time. They may eat only fruits one day, and vegetables the next. Since erratic eating habits are as normal as toddler mood swings, expect your child to eat well one day and eat practically nothing the next. Aim for a nutritionally-balanced week, not a balanced day.

Offer a nibble tray. Use an ice-cube tray, a muffin tin, or a compartmentalized dish, and put bite-size portions of colorful and nutritious foods in each section.

apple moons (thinly sliced)

avocado boats (a quarter of an avocado)

banana wheels

Dip it. Young children think that immersing foods in a tasty dip is pure fun (and delightfully messy). Some possibilities to dip into:

cottage cheese or tofu dip

cream cheese

fruit juice-sweetened preserves

guacamole

peanut butter, thinly spread

pureed fruits or vegetables

yogurt, plain or sweetened with juice concentrate

Drink it. If your youngster would rather drink than eat, don't despair. Make a smoothie – together. Milk and fruit – along with supplements such as juice, wheat germ, yogurt, and peanut butter – can be the basis of very healthy meals.

Could it be a texture thing? My daughter rejected soft or juicy fruit pieces when she was abt 1 too. Spat them out and exclaimed yuck to the juice stains left round her mouth and fingers. Seemed like she didn't like to be 'dirty". problem gone once I get her crunchy pieces. But your cases seem a little different.

i think after a few days of experimentation, my son just doesn't like being stuck on his chair with a bowl of fruit and enjoys it more when he sees other people eating. at playdate yesterday, he saw the big fruit platter at my friend's - so we placed a plastic plate on the floor for each child and he gobbled up all his watermelon, grapes and blueberries!
