what age do children start going to school or kindy in hk. i know in aus now they have a prep year around age 4 but it seems to be much earlier here (as early as 18months I heard) is this the norm? i assume this is only for a few hours each day

I know! It's bizarre isn't it! We came from Aus in Sept last year and people kept asking me why my 3 year old daughter wasn't going to school yet. They were concerned something was "wrong" with her! She started this year at one of the Woodlands schools and is loving it! She does 3 hrs each morning and catches the school bus all by herself (tho there is a teacher on the bus).I would highly recommend them.
I'm thinking about starting my little one in the playgroup next year . I will accompany him as he will only be 21 months.
Hope this helps!

Actually I don't understand why HK kids need to go to school that early! Don;t they have their whole life to study? My daughter turns 2 this month and no, hubby and I decide not to put her in anything other than parent-accompanied playgroups, despite all the pressures placed on us eg she will turn out stupid if we don;'t start school soon etc. I know people says "schools" for under 3 are not really schools in HK but really, what is wrong with staying home with mummy and playing with the neighbours kids till they are 4? just my 2 cents...

i agree with you mummybee i would much rather no formal school and just have fun playdates etc - the social interaction and activities are just as valuable as school especially if they have lots of friends. However if everyone else is off at playgroup then playdates might be tricky althogh it doesn't sound like you are finding this an issue. I think kids in hong kong are kept quite busy with lots of extra cirricular activities and schools are very competitve as well but not sure how true this is - easy to say you don't agree with it but of course you want your child to achieve or be doing the same things as others so its a tough one.
