Where to buy plain rice crackers? should be no egg, no wheat for my allergic baby...

I bought Organix rice cake, he bite, broke into half and had a chunkfull in his mouth, i pry it out immediately. I then break it into small pieces but he looks like he's gonna choke as it doesn't melt right away. He is 10 months old.

I tried Gerber, those star shape biscuits that melts easily, but it has sugar.

you need to check out city super for a japanese brand - waikodo is one of the ones that make a long finger rice cracker...those are very good for babies.

my 8 month old has the organix rice cakes too and they are fine - they do melt pretty quick in their mouth so maybe try a few more times but just watch him

honeypie, not sure how serious your child's allergies is but if serious, steer away or be very cautious giving him "normal" rice crackers. Tried Organix and had the exact same problem - chunks came off and I had to pry them out of her mouth. The japanese ones in Citysuper must have traces of egg/wheat/nuts as my daughter who is allergic to all three developed mouth rashes. They do have a disclaimer that their plants manufacture nuts/eggs/etc. BTW I can read some Japanese and the crackers in citysuper have sugar.

The ones I recommend you try are those manufactured in plants that guarantee absence of wheat/egg/nut. There are several such brands specially catered for allergic people eg "Rice and Rice" (two types: rice sticks or flat crackers) are favourites of my child's (she can chew these easily, start from 8 mths) and Citysuper stocks this recently. Orgeon (wrong spelling) is another egg-free,wheat-free,etc brand - they have great selection of pastas/rice noodles and I think they have rice crackers too. there is a great allergy shop called little giant in wanchai/causeway bay - you must go and have a look at their stocks. A gem, I reckon, for mums with allergy kids. And no, I am not related to them in any way!

Otherwise if you are a baker, I can give you a brown+white rice or pumpkin biscuit recipe that I invented but I have been told they are chewy and don;t taste gd. Well guarantee no sugar/salt/additives in them and my duaghter thinks it is the best biscuit in the world. Haha. Let me know if you want it.

Hi mummybee,

Yes, my baby cannot eat anyting with egg, wheat and nuts, better be safe as he's doing well now.

I saw the website of little giant, but i thought it's only for delivery and i can't meet the $500 minimum. Do they have rice crackers? what do you recommend to get from there? I'll go to their shop later.

Are the rice and rice AND oregon available at city super, i have time to check it out tomorrow.

I wish i'm a baker, but i'm not! If i can't find a good finger food, i'll get back to you. Thanks for your help.

No, Little Giant is a store up in this old building in Wanchai. You can click on location map in their website.

I suggest you go to Citysuper first cos I reckon you will find their selection adequate for your son since he is still young. I know the IFC branch very well and they certainly stock both 'Rice and Rice' sticks and flat crackers. Latter has salt but more chewable whilst former is 100% rice. Buy both and try. If your son can toelrate corn, this brand also carry tasty corn crackers and cookies.

Yes, Orgran is also available in Citysuper. I like the rice and millet pasta, though you may try their corn / spinach / vegetable pasta.

Next to Orgran on the shelf is another brand (italian? can't remember) with brown rice figure (teddy bear/car/flower etc) pasta - they are surprisingly soft and favourite of my daughter.

Do allow time to browse through. The baby and allergy free sections are side by side, at the very back of the store, next to wines (In IFC that is). Don't bother asking salespersons cos they are quite ignorant of this section I discover. I also find causeway bay branch carries less allergy-free stuffs.

BTW, my allergist told me to give canned tuna to duaghter as in his words no individual thus far is allergic to canned tuna (but beware not same case for other canned fish!!) and it is highly nutritous to children with fish and/or milk allergy cos of high calcium content - I like the John West, Princess and Canadian brand (can't remmeber brand but most expensive) ones cos they only have tuna, salt and oil/water. Watch out don't give him ones with soybean oil or vegetable broth! Just some ideas....

Let me know if you need more infor!

One more food option for your son: Health gate in Central stocks allergy free stuffs too but I find their selection limited for my daughter who is also allergic to less common foods like buckwheat/corn/potato. But worth going if you live nearby. They do ahve this one item that i cannot find in any other place and that is rice vermicelli (Brand: EnerG). They are delicious and good for frying and in soup and totally free of egg/wheat/soy/dairy traces even free from preservatives/colouring/bleach.
