Moving to HK - Baby Questions (Jogging stroller)

ORIGINAL POST
Posted by missyfitzy 19 yrs ago
Hello - we are moving to HK in Sept from Washington, DC and have a 7 month old baby. I had a few questions:

* does anyone use jogger stollers? I work with a guy who was born in HK and said I would be crazy to bring a jogger stoller - too crowded and no one runs with their babes? We will be living in mid levels we think

* is it easy to find formula - enfamil powder?

* carseats - will I ever use it (we are not planning on having a car but guess we would need for the plane rides?)

Any baby advice you can share or moving advice would be great. Thanks! Melissa

Agree with Grasshopper, if you plan to live in Mid-levels than you probably should use a samller and more handy stroller like MaClaren. Also true if you live at the Peak, Discovery Bay or Tai Tam then there is more open space.

My 10 months old girls takes enfapro - while we were away for holiday in Toronto I took a tin with me coz even though they have the powder under the same name in Canada the forumla is slightly different and the taste is a bit different too - my girl was fine with the transition btu the blending idea does help.

Not all airlines allow you to use your own carseat on the plane; I don't think you need one for the journey but if you really want to bring one you should check with the airline first. When I travelled with my girl when she was 6 months old I just held her all the time. She was too big for the bassinet and too small for having her own seat. Even the trip to Toronto (17hrs) I held her all the way - not fun - but it was fine and baby was happy and slept well.

Good luck with the move!

I saw a father was jogging with his baby using jogger stroller at Tung Chung recently, they were running towards airport direction and the baby was smiling all the way! Ya, lots of jogger stroller around in T.C and D.B area.

Melissa, not in Mid-levels, I live in Stanley/Tai Tam and there are quite a few mums jogging, we also have a very nice hiking trail - a lot of runners with and without babes there! Anyway, why dont you come out and check out all the areas before you decide on which to settle. Tai Tam is very handy for the American Club if you going to have a memembership - it is just opposite the Manhattan (v nice building with amazing playground and huge swimming pool). The area is much nicer for babies (my point of view only of course - as 10 min walk to the beach as well).

Formula - should not be problem - have not looked at your brand but there are a few good western brands around like Aptamil and Cow and Gate, etc.

Carseats - tough one - it is not obiligatory here, so it is up to you. We have a car, so have car seats, otherwise for taxis we use the little car safety belts that hook up to the car belt - look into those?

Good luck!

i've been in hk for a year now. we also live in midlevels. you will need a smaller stroller for the paths and also for lugging in and out of taxis! i bought a maclaren techno but am envious of my friends who have the maclaren smaller than this! although the techno's wheels are more hardy and the seat goes right down flat. it's just more bulky and heavier to carry. you could also use your baby bjorn in taxis. hubby and i love walking so we do use our bigger stroller when at the peak/southside/and all the other hiking trails (make sure you buy the book HK for Kids which lists all the pram friendly walks).

you won't use your car seats here if you don't have a car. and if you do decide to buy a car (we did and it was the best thing we did! regretted we didn't buy it earlier!) the new cars here are fitted with the isofix system.

sorry don't know much about formula (i bf'd)

I also just moved here from the states (Florida) and we live in Mid-Levels. My advice, see this as a great opportunity to downsize! We did bring our jogging stroller but only use it for walks to the peak. It is bulky and hard to store in our limited space here. I used a baby carrier when he was smaller and now he walks everywhere. A stroller is quite cumbersome here.

I don't use formula but I see lots of it in the stores, you should be fine.

You can leave the car seat behind, you won't need it here and if you find that you do need one later you can buy one. Living in Mid-Levels it's quite convenient to use the bus and taxis, and asian airlines have special seatbelts for kids.

Air Canada does not have an infant/child seat belt like Cathay does.

I have never been offered a special seat belt for a child on any of the US airlines. I think maybe beacuse many parents there take the carseat on the plane (since you need it at your destination anyway). On nearly every flight in Asia they offer one to me and I'm sure they have them even on the flights they don't offer it to us. In general the level of service on Asian airlines is much higher than US airlines. In the US you generally don't get anything more to eat than a bag of peanuts. Never mind walking barefoot through security, but that's another issue...

I live in Midlevels too and find that most of the strollers from the States are too heavy and bulky for Hong Kong. When both my daughters were small I used a Baby Bjorn baby carrier, then a MacLaren stroller and since my youngest is about 18 months, I never leave the house without my Hippy Chick. I don't see a lot around but I promise you it's the best thing since slice bread!!!! I love it. It's a thick belt with a seat incorporated so you can comfortably carry your baby on your hip, keeping your back nice and straight. I use the UK brand but there is a Japanese make that even has a little storage space hidden in the seat so you can put keys, a wallet and a pack of wipes... I promise you, it's fabuloooous!
