Hi, does anyone know how long I can stay on the pill for? My doctor prescribed diane 35 for me and I've been on it for 2 years already. Although I have not experienced any side effects, I'm wondering if it's safe to keep taking them long-term.

I was on various birth control pills for years and years with the blessing of all my doctors to control irregular periods.
I'm now on HRT which have stopped my periods.
The latest pills are much different than the first ones and there is less need to take breaks from them now.

As Tidings 2 says - pills are very different these days to hoe they used to be - I have been on the pill on and off (off to have 3 babies) for 9 years and doctors have never questioned it.
I also have a question - I moved here from the UK 2 months ago and now need to get my pill prescription - in the UK you needed to make a doctors appointment to get it but I've heard that you don't need to do that in Hong Kong - where can you get the pill from here?

Any drug store sells them openly but you need to read the technical description of yours because they same formula may be named something totally differnt here.
Fanda will read their pharmacy book to tell you what is the exact formula for you if you just give them the name of your pill.

I started taking the pill 23 years ago and have been on it more than off it ever since. I was concerned a few years ago about the long term effects so spoke to my GP. Basically if you are not high risk (read the tiny writing on the leaflet in the packet...thrombosis, blood pressure, smoker etc...)there should be no problem. He said that the pill actually was preserving the eggs and had more pros than cons health wise....fertility wise it was the same as cara...you are VERY fertile immediately after you stop taking the pill.

It also slows the meno pause process down and you remain more youthful looking for much longer.

I have also been on the pill for just over 16 years. No problems with period beofre or during. I spoke to a doctor about it a few years ago as I was concerned about long term use and was considering having a 'break', but she said since everything was going well and I had no problems then it was better to stay on the pill - it also guards against endometriosis.

kate821, does your pill diane35 can buy over the counter at the dispensary? or need to be prescribe by a doctor, I just came from Philippines and they mentioned to me there that this pill is good to take when you suffer from acne or pimples when taking other contraceptive pills.
I was planning to buy there before but I totally forgot before I flew back here.

This is very reassuring. Thank you all for the great advice. I guess it is safe to keep taking my pills.
Abby78, I got Diane 35 with a doctor's prescription, I'm not sure if you can get it without. I got them at Manning's, so you can probably just go there and ask if you can buy them otc.
There are a lot of benefits to Diane, I am mainly using them for regulating my period but also for my skin. It has done wonders cause my skin is completely clear but I used to have acne before.

yeah kate821, the first one who mentioned to me about Diane35 was a head nurse, she told me when I was complaining that i can't take contraceptive pill because it triggers my acne, and she said diane35 works well for those who suffer acne, and I heard from other people that it works well for them.
Thanks kate821, I will try mannings, if not I will ask my doctor to prescribe me one.

I stopped using the pill because it triggered my migraines. I would get a migraine a day or two just before getting my period. Now I wonder what would happen if I did not take a break, and started another pack right away like pumpkin...?

Tidings 2: What are you taking that stops your period completely? I've been on pills for almost 5 years now. The first 2 years were OK but lately I've been getting bad cramps when I get my period ...
