If you have a student visa, only way to earn money legally ( as far as I know) is by working for the university on campus. For example, if a professor is looking for an assistant, you could get a job with him/her then get paid via the university. However, this dose not give you any right to work outside of the school. Unless you work illegally under the table and get paid cash. After you graduate, only way to be able to work legally in the states is by having your prospective employer sponsor you. Or marry an American citizen and get a conditional green card. Good luck

There are several way to do this. Poiuy mentioned one, work for the university. (there are a lot of jobs in major universities, not just work for the prof. Libraries, food service, student residence hall staff, university facilities, campus maintenance, etc.) In addition if you apply for a university sponsored work study program, you can use it to work off campus. Even without the work study program, F1 visa holders are entiled 18 month work training. So you can work for up to 18 months during the entire period of your studies. Most people do not use before graduation because you will need this to find permanent work if you intend to live in the US after getting your degree. Best way is to go to Immigration and get a work permit. They usually will give F1 visa holders 1 year work permits. I got 'em every year I applied, and worked through my entire university days.

However, this was many years ago, and rules may have changed. You should contact your university's international student services, and they will have all the answers for you.
