Sony DVD player - play copied DVD's?

Not that I would ever, ever play a copied DVD, but I would strongly advise this rule of thumb: the cheaper the set, the more likely it is to play anything. Such Chinese brands as Shinco, Bo Bo Go, Kawaii, and others freely available do the job extremely well. It's something about being able to "read" the tolerance limits of the laser beam better than the more expensive machines can. If your friends have such brands, try out a couple of the DVDs first. As to your second point, some (not all) original DVDs have copy protection that theoretically prevents them from being copied.

In keeping with Asiaxpat's spirit, I will not steer you away from SONY but would steer you toward the Chinese brands. FWIW.
