Hawaii for Christmas

My family and I are meeting up with relatives in Maui over the winter break for our return trip home for the year. Does anyone know how to book the flight arrangements most efficiently? It seems that there are no direct flights there from HK--could that be? Thanks for any ideas!

Philippine Airlines via Manila is one of the easier options.

I would second that, Phil airlines is fine and their economy class has more leg room than most other Asia based airlines. If you need to stay over in Manila one night use Mabuhay Manor in Pasay about 15 mins from airport.

No direct flight from Asia.

United has a good connection, with a couple of hrs transit time in Narita airport.

HK > Narita> Honolulu> Maui

You can go via Narita, Taipei or Seoul.

Via Narita you usually get quite a long wait between flights. Seaoul airport is very nice and I was really impressed with Korean Air. Via Taipei is one I haven't tried yet but it is on Air China or China Air. Just make sure you arrive in Honolulu at an hour when you can connect to Maui otherwise you will need to overnight in HNL. All up it is aobut a 24hour journey.

We took a flight from China (GZ) on NWA to Narita, then took a JAL flight direct to Kona, Big Island. Then you could take a very short flight to Maui. We did that and it was the most gorgeous 30 min. flight! We loved JAL, and flew with our 2.5 month old baby.

We "live" in Hawaii, and there is NO direct flights from HKG to HNL. From years of going back and forth these 2 destinations, Philippines Airlines has the best offer. Rates are usually the cheapest. Layovers usually the shortest, and it's got the most leg room on board. Though the connection is a little "interesting", because you'd need to be led through security points instead of going straight to the connection gates. Plus the connection terminal is very small and limited.

With that all said though, as Dani R wrote above, there are direct flights from Japan to Kona, and I think to Maui as well now(?). So if you want to combine and add on Japan for a couple of days, that may be a good way to go.
