Get the book 'skinny bitch' it has a lot of info on aspartame found in most 'sugar free' products....not something good to have in it....

Topgal,

why don't you just get a full cafeine / full sugar coke if you really want it ?

Once in a while, it's really enjoyable and a glass of it is worth liters of unsatisfying diet whatever.

Btw :

1)caffeine will increase your memory when you are old (80 yo women with regular 5 cuppaday caffeine intake perform around 30% better than other non caffeine drinkers)

2) real sugar is probably what you really NEED and you can"t cheat yr body with fake sugar, which is v. bad for yr health, much more than real sugar, unless you are diabetic. Maybe you crave it because you do not eat enough starch ?

Maybe try a book called sth like French women don't diet or French women never get fat, or anything else ressembling that. I browsed through it in WHSmith in Paris, and it looks really sensible... Eat foie gras in reasonnable quantity you'll get less calories than eating a box of "sugarfree" coockie, sthlike that which really makes sense to me (but then, i'm French).

OK, time to finish this good Swiss raw milk cheese which i bought in Great in Pacific Place a couple of days ago.... that's my kind of craving, together with black chocolate (though i did not find any decent one in HK yet).

I've switched to coke zero because I think it tastes muich much better than diet coke. Realise that its still pretty awful for you, but if you read the label it only has 2 artificial sweetners compared to diet cokes 3!!

agree with Saikunga - alll three are pretty bad for you in large quantities. As mayita said - as long as you are reasonable.... Mayita - as for dark chocholate - am pretty sure I have seen Valvrona in either ThreeSixty or Olivers...

very sweet mayita, thank you! Olivers is on 3rd floor in Prince's Bldg and ThreeSixty in in Landmark. Of course there is always Godiva (also either in Prince's Bldg or another one in IFC) - but that normally costs a fortune... Also there is a belgian choch shop (forget what it is called) right next to CitySuper in IFC.

I can't tolerate diet drinks with aspartame. I get very nauseated for 2 days after. Have tested it a few times and for sure it's a problem for me.

It's like msg, it may be natural but I doubt it's good for us.

Agave nectar /syrup is a high nutrient sweetener that can be beneficial to your health. It doesn't contain any processing chemicals, It is absorbed slowly into your blood stream so doesn't have a significant inpact on sugar levels. Stevia is a Japanese sweetener that also works in a similar way. Other 'good' sweeteners are sucanat, rapadura and turbinado. Aspartame is one of the big no nos. Some of its ingredients include methyl alcohol which converts into formaldahyde. It basically does all sorts of things to you which are quite scary and apparently should never been approved and actually only did by default. Some people have been seriously effected by it....it may just be worth a google....

My mother and father use aspartame a lot and it worries me. I guess they feel since so many people use it globally it must be OK.

Thank you girls !

Actually not that very found of Leonidas, which actually cost a fortune here (over 70 buck / 100 g) compared to Paris.

I'm not a big fan of Swiss & Belgian chocolate, too much sugar, too much cream not enough bitter cocoa....

Valronha seems a v. good bet

Any other ideas would be welcome ....

Concerning Aspartam, phenylanalyn( or whatever they call it) in France, every pack containing it says it whould not be given to children less of 24 month or 18 month old, as it may damage brain development. I guess that if it's not good for them, it's not good for me either. Is it ?

mayita - when you go to Olivers (was in there yesterday and checked) Valvrona is not in the usual chocs section (where they have all the crap like Mars bars etc) but under the baking section - at the end of the shop!

mayita> Aspartame started out as a possible neuro-toxin weapon, till someone noticed it was very sweet. Of course it's still a neuro-toxin but now everyone can get to "enjoy" it, not just the enemy.

BTW, Pat Chun sells Green & Black's dark (70%)chocolate in 35g mini bars for $12 for people who find the temptation of a larger bar too much...

Idsylln, I read in a recent article in a UK newspaper about the emerging "quality" chocolate industry in Britain(last week, in the Guardian, the Telegraph or the Times) that G&B is actually made in France although this fact is not highlighted by the company. Will look for the article. I had a quick look at the G&B website and I don't see any mention of where their factory is located.
