On the NET scheme but no school!!

Hi,

I've arrived in HK having been accepted onto the government Native English Tutor scheme... 'Scheme' being the operative word, as I've still not found a school.

They've sent me the spreadsheet of schools still seeking NETs and I'm applying directly...

I've lived/worked in HK before but I have two questions:

*Can anyone recommend any alternative teaching programmes which are as well paid? Or alternative jobs, even, for someone with experience in the charitable and teaching sector but no Cantonese!

*Can I apply for a work visa before finding a job? As lots of adverts want HKID or work visa before I'm even considered...

Many thanks!!

Unfortunately you need a sponsoring company (or school) to apply for a work visa. So that can only be done once you have found a job.

So I figured... Thanks evildeeds...

Anyone have any better options than the NET programme or have any advice about finding a decent school in Kowloon/HK Island?

Thanks!

Am already painfully aware of HK's bureaucracy as I've worked here before.

The EMB interviewed me, I've been accepted onto the scheme and turned up in HK knowing I hadn't signed a contract with a school. I rejected a number of interviews as the schools were way too far up in the NT. I'm now working thru a spreadsheet emailed to me by Phoebe Yu at the EMB.

Am on a tourist visa for now.

Cheers!

It's Phoebe Mok and I suggest you ring her at the EDB or Stephen Lai. It all sounds very odd but, as they say, the wheels are slow and the schools are many:-) First tour, I would expect the NTs but you might get lucky! If you have a Primary or Secondary Dip Ed/BEd, there are the International schools and ESF.

You shouldn't have come before having secured a job. Best thing is to sit tight at home and keep bombarding EDB with emails/phonecalls.You will eventually find a job, I'm sure, but because u came before you signed a contract your airfare will not be refunded to you.

Cheers guys...

I had to come to HK in mid-August for various reasons, if I'm to stay at all.

It's my understanding I would've had my flight refunded either way, but I actually came from London by train, which totally confused the EMB (the tickets actually worked out cheaper!)

I'll charm Pheobe on Monday and see what happens - thanks for your help... Though it'd be great to have NESTA give me a hand, they won't let me join until I'm an actual NET!

Cheers!

I'm surprised you still haven't found a school. I heard 500 nets were returning (mainly back to Canada/Australia) because of the high dollar issue. Good luck, I could only stand being a net for a year before I had to give it up, good money or no good money, the school staff were horrendous.
