Tibet permit

The rules recently changed making this tricky as technically you can't now go there without a tour as they want to make sure you don't get into trouble... however it can be done.

Try contacting a travel agent in Lhasa to sort your permit, and as an incentive for them (ie sorting you out on a "tour") get them to book you your tickets for the Potala Palace as you have no chance of getting these unless you want to queue up from 6.30 in the morning the day before, waiting for the ticket office to open at 9.30 - not fun - i saw the queues last week.

Also, although I went through the hassle of getting a permit, not one person actually asked to see it.

I booked my own flights and hotels online with minimum hassle which saved loads of money and just used an agent in Lhasa for the day to day stuff - it would be worth you booking a driver only for one day to see a few of the monasteries, but you don't need a guide and then if you want to travel around Tibet you can pick up drivers, trips etc once you get to Lhasa.
