We have a small family car which accomodates our 2 children in forward facing car seats. i was hoping to share the school run with a couple of other mums but this would involve taking 3 four year olds in the car. We can't fit a booster seat in the back along with our 2 car seats, but it seems that very few cars will take even 3 booster seats. What do other people do? I know that some people I have spoken to have one child sitting in the back with the lap belt on. I wouldn't be confident that this would be a safe option for my daughter who is quite small for her age. Is it safer to put a car seat or booster in the front passenger seat?

My kids have sat on normal car seats, then booster seats since they were small.

Sorry, meant to say in the front seat. I don't have a front airbag though.

we faced a similar problem, in that we had to fit 2 rearfacing and one forward facing child restraints in our sedan ... with the seats we'd bought (from the US), it just couldn't be done --- and we ended up buying a second-hand previa (8seater) ... but then each of our car seats needed a tether too (which meant having toyota install extra bolts)... tell me THAT wasn't fun!
I know how you feel tho regarding the school run thing!! i've had to toss that up in my own head for a while too. ... i've backed out, as i don't knwo what my child would sit in in someone else's car. i have read that if you *absolutely* HAVE to use the front seat, to 1)deactivate the airbag and 2)push the vehicle seat as far back as possible
check out carseatsite.com or thecarseatlady.com (i think those are the addresses) ... both have FAB information. i believe there's also another site just for boosters ? boostersafety.org? maybe
