Hello everyone!

so the technology beotian that i am wants to buy an ipod to be able to listen to Cantonese lesson in the MTR (+ music, while i am at it).

Soooooo, i've seen the cutest red 8 Gig nano ipod on apple store, and was wondering :

- is it ok to just buy that

- do i need to buy additional things like headsets, USB plugs, battery stuffs, etc. or do they all come in with the Ip Pod order.

- would you also recommand that i buy external appliances -loudspeaker, so that i can listen to music ? shall i buy them from the apple store or not ?

- Any other ipod related suggestions ?

Thanks a lot for your comments

as long as you have a home computer, mac or PC then all the items you need are in the box including easy to follow intructions. just read then ALL carefully and you will have no problems.

as for aftermarket items, the only one you will need to buy are a case to protect it and these come in a huge variety. just look to see which one suits you and you will be fine with most accesories.

happy podding

NB: I believe that the Nano does NOT come with a mains charger so you will ONLY be able to charge the battery up via the USB-Computer cable(the computer will need to be switched on).

I connect my IPOD to the amplifier of my home music centre, a special but cheap cable and easily sourced from most electrical shops, is necessary for this. I also have a mains charger next to it so that the music does not go off after a few hours of play which becomes more likely as the Ipod nears it 1st birthday!

Thank you mcjak for the tip about the lack of charger for the battery.

1) Anyone know where i can find chargers & extra battery ? Do I have to buy them from the Apple website or can I fing reasonably priced & good quali.ones elsewhere ?

2) I actually arrived recently in HK, and certainly do not posess such thing as a home music centre.... as far as technology is concerned, the only things i have are a mobile phone, a camera, and a laptop !!!

So I thought investing in speakers would be good, as i could download my CD's on my computer and then on the ipod. And maybe use speaker for Ipod nano to listen to the music in my flat....

Ipods don't have interchangable batteries like mobile phones. The battery is sealed in so you just keep recharging it until it doesn't hold a charge any more, then you buy a new iPod :-)

Some of the speaker systems will recharge the iPod at the same time. Your best bet is to go to one of the places that sells Apple stuff and look at the range. Have a look on Apple's web site to find the Apple store most convenient to you.

Regarding External speakers:

There are really only three that i would ever consider on the market. I base this on sound quality, durability and of course style.

they are the JBL, the BOSE and the Apple iPod HiFi.

All of these offer a surprisingly good sound quality but each is suited for different purposes.

In my own opinion the BOSE is perfect if your requirement is not volume but more clarity. They are very well suited to classical types of music and do this very well. they are compact and can be hidden in a bookcase or descretly out of sight.

The Apple iPod HiFi (which i chose) has a huge amount of power. It is suited to a more varied style of music and can handle the bass of more modern music. It also is the only high power iPod system that is portable, running on six large normal batteries. This makes it great for days on the beach. In addition it can be connected via a toslink optical cable to either your Apple router for wireless music from your laptop, or to any other system with an optical out. It also looks great but it is the most expensive of them all and the largest.

The JBLs are more about style than anything else but can perform well to back them up. these would probably be last on my list of the three but there is really nothing wrong with them. Loud and very nice to look at.

If you own an Apple then i would choose the Apple HiFi.
