A friend is having a very quiet wedding ceremony. She is western and he is chinese.
I am worried about offending anyone. I would like to take a gift, but am unsure about chinese wedding customs (my first wedding here) - also about dress - I will dress up of course, but is there any colors I should avoid, and should I wear a hat?
Cheers for any advice

At Chinese wedding the 'gift' is cash. You can buy cash vouchers (with suitable envelope) at HSBC, etc. Do not include any coins.
Don't wear white. I've been to registry office weddings and seen people wearing jeans. Check with the bride as to the formality of the wedding, i.e. black tie, church, DJs, etc. Hats are generally not worn... except by overseas visitors.

Assuming that they do not have a gift register and you want to bring a gift, please do not give a clock. Chinese people do not traditionally give clocks as gifts because the sound of "giving a clock" sounds like "a funeral" in Chinese.

Thanks for the info- Claire, what would be an appropriate gift for a simple registry wedding, then lunch for around 10 people?

cash is always best, of course in a good envelope. Vouchers r also widely given in HK weddings.

I was kind of hinting at an amount!
Please support our advertisers:
something with an 8. as eight is a lucky number. not a number 4
but ask your bank - they would know and the amount depends on how close you are to the couple.

Thanks Wiz Bang - I have a small reprieve, they have postponed the wedding for a month. Apprently his mother is very unhappy they have chosen this month (the ghost month?) and in the interests of family peace, they are chosing another date - it is just that this date really suited them. Oh well.

oh yes. the 26th is the start of the ghost month
