baby fell & cut lip

ORIGINAL POST

Hi there, I've just been to the ER with my 8 month old. She fell while standing up at the coffee table and I couldn't grab her in time (she fell to the side just within a hair of my fingertips). Anyhow, the cut is small but deep and it's on her lip. The doc said to try keeping a bandaid on it first, but worse case scenario she might have to get a stitch if we can't get her to keep the bandaid on - the cut needs to form a scab... We've been home for an hour and I've already replaced the bandage 3 times- she keeps licking or rubbing it off. Has anyone ever gone through this before? Stitches on lip, etc?

What you can do is get a tube of "dental adhesive" - it is a paste that you smear on the cut. I was given it at the ER when my child did the same thing. Worked really well and we managed to avoid stitches too.

Thanks for this info. We had to go back to the hospital tonight as the cut started to bleed again. but by the time we got there and saw the doctor the cut had begun to dry up! I guess we distracted baby long enough that it had a little time to dry out. So now stitches for now, but will keep the above info as this will probably happen again at some point (unfortunately)!

Hi- thanks for asking. She's fine. The cut never interrupted her sleep, eating or playing. I just looks like a scrape on her lip. I think her parents were more stressed out than her! Oh well- first trip to the ER over with.

Glad to hear she is fine. I was always told by my doctor sister that in fact you only have about 24hrs within which to stitch because the edges start to heal and then you don't get good results. Generally though with smaller cuts they use either butterfly clips or "superglue" to join them back together. My 8 yo was refusing to have stitches in his leg (Grandpa also a doctor was doing it) and so we had to use butterfly clips. It was the night before we flew to HK for good, and then we just couldn't keep him non active so it didn't knit together very nicely. He has a lovely scar but on inside of his thigh and he will be hairy so we just didn't bother putting him through the stress (he is a panicker!).
