Baby Laundry - all gray?

ORIGINAL POST
Posted by MumBee 19 yrs ago
I have found that my baby's laundry (whites and light colors) seem to turn gray in the laundry, even when I dont wash the whites/light colored clothes with any dark colors. We have a typical front load washer/dryer combo, and use either 60C or 90C temperature and baby laundry detergent or Ecover.

The machine is new (we are the first occupants of the flat) and we did run several empty washes just to make sure the machine was clean.

Has anyone else found this, and any suggestions for how to prevent the graying-ing in the future?

Thanks.

We do separate the laundry (when I say whites and light colors, I mean whites and very light cream colored or something similar) yet the gray-ing is still there. Is there something we can add to the wash to prevent this? I dont think it is color transfer, since there is nothing of color in the wash.

Thanks. So have you experienced this gray-ing as well? Especially on the elastic bits.

We have been using KAO bleach powder for years and it has done an excellent job of keeping our whites white. Prior to washing, we spray on some stain remover and that also helps tremendously.

We also do all of the laundry in cold water because we've found that the clothes come out softer and in less need of fabric conditioner. (Hot water seems to cause pilling as well.)

I know that washing in cold water seems strange but it does work. We used environmentally-friendly nappies for both of our babies and you know how yucky babies' bowel movements can be!

bump please - the laundry is getting even grayer, though we are reducing the temperature of the wash and have switched laundry detergents as well.

thanks.

Nappysan is pretty good in making your clothes whiter and brighter. You can soak your clothes before you wash them or just add them with your normal laundry detergent. I think the product if from Japan, and is available in Parknshop. Also restores colours on colour run clothes.

Do you use a fabric conditioner? I've found in the past that some fabric conditioners, particularly the yellow or blue coloured Comfort, have turned my whites yellowy or grey ... even after a first time wash with them, I've compared to other whites and there's a definite colour difference. I stick to Softlan now as I don't get the same problem.

You can also just add Napisan to your wash. Does the same trick. Greys are gone... i.e. we don't have the problem any longer. The other option we used was to use Vanish (i think it's under the manufacturer).
